Autism Awareness
By: Madalyn Frank
People get diagnosed with autism either when they are born or in the first couple years of their life. If someone in your family has autism it is more likely for the genes to get passed down and the child to have autism but sometimes that is not the case and people will be diagnosed without anyone they know having autism. Another way scientists think that people could be diagnosed with autism at a young age is the environment that they are in.
Since there is no cure for autism, people with autism either take medicine for symptoms such as anxiety or get therapy for some of the symptoms of autism. Most therapists help people with their language and communication skills along with other life skills.
People with autism have more difficulties socializing, communicating, and with repetitive behaviors. Just because people with autism have a difficult time with these things does not mean that they can not do them it just means that they have to work a little harder then everyone else in order to do them.
People with autism are not worse or less than anyone else they just see the world a little differently. Most of the time people think people with autism need extra help but most of the time they are very smart if not smarter than the rest of us.
When you communicate to someone with autism you just need to understand that they have a difficult time with it and you should be patient with them. You should try and include people with autism because the more often they are included the more comfortable they will get and that will help them with their communicating a lot. Also they are no different then anybody else and can be just as fun to be around and cool as anyone else.
