Stories of 2015
2015 Paris Attacks
This past November, a series of coordinated bombings and shootings occurred throughout the City of Lights. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people and injured 368 others. The attacks provoked the largest airstrike of Operation Chammal, France's bombing campaign against ISIL.
Same-Sex Marriage Court Ruling
In June, 2015, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state-level bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional, resulting in the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide. Ever since the 1970's, there has been a slow but ongoing struggle for same-sex couples to legalize their marriage and in 2015, it has paid off.
San Bernardino Shooting
This past December, 14 people were killed in a mass shooting now deemed a terrorist attack. The perpetrators, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, carried out the shooting in a holiday party for the San Bernardino Department of Public Health and were later killed in a shootout with the police. This event will go down in history as the most deadly terrorist attack in the United States since the 9/11 attacks.
Black Lives Matter Movement
Following the police shootings of several unarmed black men and teenagers, social media erupted condemning police brutality and racism against black people using the hashtag BlackLivesMatter. This movement began public demonstrations across the country arguing for race equality although some of its methods are criticized.
Europe's Migrant Crisis
In 2015, thousands of migrants from the Middle East (mainly Syria) fled to Europe to seek refuge from conflict. The European Union is struggling to deal with the crisis and has established quotas and reinforced the Coast Guards in an attempt to fight migrant smuggling. The issue remains to this day, and there are mixed opinions on how to solve it.
Companies of 2015
Nothing says innovation, ingenuity, and popularity like Apple. Apple is ranked #1 in the world for Most Admired Company of 2015. The new Apple Watch and iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have shown the dominance of arguably the most influential companies of this decade.
With a total of $66 billion in revenue last year, Google proves that it is here to stay not only as a search engine but as an innovative company. Even though Google Glass is officially dead, the Google Self Driving Car is still the center of advanced research. Its global competitiveness also contributes to its worldwide success and influence.
Products of 2015
While the Apple Watch isn't the only product in its class, it is certainly the most discussed (making it the most popular). This product makes this list not because it is the most useful/quality item available, but because it has opened the door to the future of smartwatches.
Movies of 2015
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
This long awaited $200 million budget masterpiece made its way into the theaters last December. Since then it has grossed $1.557 billion in box office sales and it hasn't stopped yet. This makes it the highest-grossing film in North America and the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. Critic's reviews are mostly positive, but some, including George Lucas himself, have argued that the movie was made mainly for profit. Unfortunately the film has been marketed so much that I can't avoid advertisements anywhere I go. From Television trailers to partnerships with automotive manufacturers, The Force Awakens has seen it all.
Disney's Inside Out is a movie that appeals to all ages and all types of people. It proved that right when it ended up as Disney's ninth highest-grossing film of all time. It suggested a very fictional yet entertaining way of interpreting the way that people think. Its ratings were also very positive, as the film had a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98% based on 301 reviews. Despite all of its success, the film was marketed subtly with only the usual Television trailers.
Musical Artists of 2015
Making a massive return to the America's Top Hits is Adele. Her newest album, 25, incorporates the same lost love/ nostalgia theme as before, but 25 has proved to be anything but boring. 3.38 MILLION copies were sold in the first week of its release! Several interviews led up to the release of the much awaited new album, which made a profound impact in such a short amount of time.
After blowing up in 2014, rapper and singer Fetty Wap had another very successful year in 2015. His hit single, Trap Queen, won most played video in 2015
