Due Date Extended to November 7
Please see PTA website for detailsGeography Bee
Students in 4th and 5th grades are invited to participate in our National Geographic "Geography Bee." This is an opportunity for your child to learn more about the
world around them! By clicking on the link provided below, your child will have all of the study materials that they need. Your child will study individually from now until January 25th! That is a lot of time to prepare! Should your child be the champion at Mathews (there must be at least 6 participants at Mathews before any student can advance), your child will then take an Online Qualification Test. This test can be given to only one student. GeoBee will advise us if the champion qualifies for the State GeoBee on March 29, 2019.
We hope you will encourage your child to participate in this challenge. If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
In January we will ask for the names of all those students who have been preparing so that they can participate in the School GeoBee. Happy studying!

After Thanksgiving break:
November 26 & 28: Finish Topic 7 Lessons
November 30: Topic 7 Math Test

All 5th graders should complete 30 minutes of Dreambox outside of school each week.
SCIENCE
Our unit of study is titled Force, Motion, and Energy. Students are learning about the different forms of energy (M E L T S) at the beginning of this unit.
Please have your child share their science notebook with you at least once a week so that you can ask them questions about their science lessons. Students can also access the explorations and reading passages we use in class by going on webdesk.pisd.edu and clicking on the Discovery Education Plano app. This app provides a great way to review material that is covered in class.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students are learning about the first permanent English settlement in North America (Jamestown) and will compare this settlement to the Plymouth Colony.
Students will learn about the important people, the challenges faced, as well as the successes. Students will continue to learn about other settlements and how these grew into the New England, Middle, and Southern colonial groups.
A quiz over the Jamestown and Plymouth settlements will be given on either Wednesday (11/14) or Thursday (11/15) depending on our learning pace.
We are looking forward to extending student learning during Colonial Days November 8th and 9th. We will be participating in colonial kitchen activities, toys and games from the colonial time period, making candles, learning how to stencil, etc. We believe this will be a wonderful experience for our students. Thank you for volunteering to help make this happen.
READING
Students are enjoying reading their novels and preparing for book clubs each Friday. The discussions are great and insightful!
In addition to reading novels, students participate in in-depth reading instruction each week followed by opportunities to apply what they have learned during their stations (read aloud station, the computer station, and writing station).
Groups also work with the teacher during a guided reading lesson allowing for small group interaction and a closer look at each student's strengths and weaknesses. This allows teachers to continue to modify and adjust their teaching based on student needs. Our goal is to help your child learn to enjoy reading and, therefore, do more of it this year!
As always, it is incredibly important that your child read at least 20 minutes a day after school.
