IALAS Board of Directors

President Álvarez's Message
We are super excited to announce that your organization won State Affiliate of the Year for 2022! Thank you for all you have done to make your organization spread our wings to include all and make a positive difference. Huge thank you to Imagine Learning and Jazmin Medrano Sharp who sponsored IALAS so we can attend the Gala and receive our trophy. Thank you to the ALAS Board and Dr. Maria Armstrong. I am sure it was a difficult decision to choose just one state. We know every state affiliate has worked hard.
The ALAS conference provided so many wonderful sessions and we had some of our own IALAS members presenting. Sharing pictures below.
We want to take this time to celebrate all our administrators during National Principal Month. National Principals Month is our time to be our school principals' cheerleaders as we honor their servant leadership and labor of love. You all are visionary leaders and put many hours to achieve success for every student. We thank you for all you do yesterday, today and future goals for our schools.
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. It is a time to acknowledge that bullying has devastating effects on children and families such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression. Take time to discuss ways we can be upstanders against bullying. One way is by wearing and sharing ORANGE on Unity Day on October 19. On this day we come together to spread kindness, acceptance and inclusion. It is this simple act to show we believe no individual should ever experience bullying.
Have a safe and happy Halloween and as always, gracias for choosing to be an IALAS member and continue to spread your IALAS wings as anti-racist, equitable, educational leaders. We look forward to seeing you virtually or in-person in the coming months.
Respectfully,
Elizabeth Álvarez, Ph.D.
IALAS President

Teaching Reading in Spanish: A Linguistically Authentic Framework for Emerging Multilinguals by Dr. Rocio del Castillo-Perez and Dr. Julia Stearns Cloat
Teaching Reading in Spanish: A Linguistically Authentic Framework for Emerging Multilinguals is an essential teacher instructional guide to developmental biliteracy. It provides a comprehensive reading framework for teachers who teach students to read Spanish in K-12 dual language and bilingual programs. Anchored in asset-based pedagogy, this framework applies a systematic Spanish literacy approach to biliteracy by weaving together a tapestry of relevant instructional components including phonemic and phonological awareness, oracy, decoding, background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge.
What sets this Spanish developmental literacy framework apart is its approach to Spanish reading instruction that is based on linguistically-authentic pedagogy, not on English-language practices. Teaching Reading in Spanish includes the DCC Leveling Instrument, a standards-based, practical instructional tool that guides teachers through the process of efficiently and accurately determining the reading levels of authentic Spanish text. DCC Lectura provides teachers with the tools that they need to guide their students to become skilled readers through appropriately challenging books that act as multicultural mirrors, windows, and sliding-glass doors.
Teaching Reading in Spanish is available on Amazon for Preorder here.
