A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
Our 3rd quarter has come to a close. Today, we begin the 4th quarter of school! It's hard to believe that we are in the final stretch of this school year.
I encourage all families to keep up to speed on the Moving 15 Forward communication that has been sent to parents via email. There are important updates to the school calendar for the next few years that will impact all families.
Track and Field Registration opened on February 24th. All information is linked HERE, including the link to register for this sport. Check out the D15 website for more information about schedules. This is a "no cut" sport. All students are welcome to join and are guaranteed to have a great experience. Students will be join a strong team that is led by experienced coaches and take pride in competing as Wildcats! The first practice is April 3rd.
Girls Soccer Registration opened on February 24th. All information is linked HERE. The tryouts are this week! We wish the best of luck to all girls trying out for the 7tn and 8th grade teams. Check out the D15 website for more information about schedules.
I encourage all parents to check Infinite Campus to review their child's grades and reach out to the teachers with any questions. While we strive to teach independence with our students, we appreciate the partnership between home and school. Here is a link to our staff directory for your reference. Don't hesitate to reach out to our staff for help if you need any support!
Thank you for your continued support at Sandburg!

We want to hear from YOU!
You have been invited to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey. The information you provide will help guide improvement as we strive to inspire each student to realize their potential. Your participation in this survey is voluntary but crucial. We can’t receive results from the survey unless at least 20 percent of parents respond. The more responses parents provide, the more we will know how to focus our efforts toward the improvements you want. Please help us reach our goal by completing the survey.
As of today, we have reached 11% of our families who have taken this survey. We need at least 50 more responses in order to get your feedback!
2023 Illinois Parent Survey
- Link to survey: http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/
· Select “Parent Survey.”
· You may enter your email address if you would like to receive confirmation of your submission, but it is not required.
· Then enter “Cook” into the county field and “Carl Sandburg” to find our school. Be sure to select Carl Sandburg Junior High at 2600 Martin Lane in Rolling Meadows.
You will then be asked a series of questions to provide input regarding your family’s experience here at Carl Sandburg. Please remember to click “submit” once you are done so your responses can be counted.
Please know that your identity and responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected with your child. If you have multiple children who attend Sandburg, you may complete one survey for each child. However, only one parent per household may submit a survey for a given child. The survey closes on March 31, so please submit your responses soon!
Thank you in advance for your time and input. We appreciate you!
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact 5Essentials Customer Support at 1-866-440-1874 or 5essentials@uchicago.edu.
National Junior Honors Society
Applications for eligible 7th graders for National Junior Honor Society will become available when we return from Spring Break. Students and parents will receive an email with the congratulatory letter. Students will be asked to join a Google Classroom where they can find the application.
For students to be eligible for NJHS they must maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA and above in 7th grade and maintain the character and integrity of our school-wide expectations: be respectful, be responsible, be safe.

Next week we will have a homeroom penny wars March 20th - 24th. Specifics will be shared on morning announcements with students.
- Place pennies and dollars in your OWN homeroom jar (or who you want to win)
- Sabotage other homerooms by adding silver coins to their jars (will be providing each teacher with a list of teachers and room numbers)
- Homeroom with the most amount of points (pennies + dollars, and subtract silver) will win the penny war
- The homeroom that wins will be notified of their win by the end of the day Friday and receive a homeroom prize
The money we collected will be donated to an organization. Stay tuned for more information!
