Department Goals
Pre-K-5 Foundational Skills/Word Study/Writing Rubric Implementation
Our focus will be on building teacher capacity with pedgagogy and appropriate district resources for the instruction of writing and foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics (decoding/encoding), morphology and fluency. Direct instruction and an understanding of the scope and sequence of pre-reading skills (TEKS) in whole group and small group instruction will result in students ability to comprehend text in their appropriate reading levels. Teachers will use the universal screener (Istation) to determine student needs and differentiate targeted lessons. Ongoing progress monitoring (Istation) will measure growth in these skill areas, particularly with tier 2 and 3 students.
District Balanced Literacy Plan
We will be developing a universal understanding of balanced literacy within the district. Sharing the plan in the fall of 2018, we will use this guiding document to inform our department's decisions with regards to teacher training, resources and areas for improvement/
collaboration within and across departments.
