A message from Nurse Reese
Regardless of vaccination status, an individual who tests positive should isolate at home for 5 days. The day your symptoms begin is considered Day 0 (zero). On Day 6, as long as symptoms are improving and you are fever free for 24 hours, you can return to school, while wearing a mask through Day 10.
A quarantine is no longer recommended for an in house contact provided the individual remains asymptomatic. Testing is recommended immediately after the exposure and again between Days 3-5 after exposure, and it is suggested that a mask is worn through Day 10.
Attendance Matters - Show up healthy, all winter long
Do your best to stay healthy. Emphasize hand washing, and send your students to school with a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Stay up-to-date on vaccinations.
Dress your students for the cold weather. WPS provides assistance to families who need help with winter clothing - just contact your school counselor.
Stay home when sick. If your student is ill, including vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, PLEASE keep them home for at least 24 hours. The fever must be gone WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medications before they should return to school.
If your child exhibits the symptoms listed above, please notify your child’s school so that the absence can be excused. In the event that your child has accumulated ten or more absences this school year, doctor’s notes may be required.
If your student tests positive for COVID-19, they must stay home for 5 days and their school will continue to provide instruction and/or enrichment per our COVID procedures.
Additionally we are continuing our Attendance competition through the rest of the year for the Attendance Gavel and a chance to have a pizza party at the end of the year!

Biliteracy Seal
Are you interested in earning the Virginia State Seal of Biliteracy? JHHS is offering students the chance to take the AVANT 4S test in Spanish, French, German, and other languages.
What is it? The Seal of Biliteracy is a special stamp/seal that gets added to your diploma and listed on your transcripts.
How does it help me? This seal shows colleges, the military, and jobs that you can communicate in two different languages. This is a valuable skill!
What is the test like? The test is 4 different parts: reading, writing, speaking and listening. It takes 2-3 hours to complete the whole test. You will need to speak into a microphone for the speaking part. You can see samples from the AVANT 4S test and try it out HERE.
How does it work? You will get four scores (one for each part). In order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, you must score a 5 or higher (out of 9) in each section.
Who? Any student at Handley can take the test. If you have already taken an AP test in this language and earned a 3 or higher- Congrats! You already have the Biliteracy Seal! Seniors will have priority if tests are limited.
When? There will be dates chosen in March. At this time, you will chose A Day or B Day as a preference.
What you need to do! Fill out THIS FORM to get on the list! Must be completed by Monday, January 30th.
