Hope
In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael's dad tells him a quote. In that quote, he implies the meaning of hope. Now hope to me, is very important, because it lets me hang on to whatever I'm feeling, or doing, or maybe even what I want to say. Hope is a very important thing to have because, if somebody does not have hope, they will always be careless and negative. Ishmael's dad really gave the reader a literal definition of hope only by using two sentences, and I loved that.

Escaping Death
In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael escaped death many, many times. I remember while reading the novel, he and a group of friends were going from town to town, and came across some rebels. They knew the rebels had seen them, and they proceeded to crawl through a bridge. Luckily, none of them got shot or taken away. Ishmael faced and escaped death a great amount of times, but he always managed to keep his head up high and push forward.
