Eye of the Dragon
John Dewey Academy of Learning, March 28, 2023
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the John Dewey Academy of Learning is to provide students
with a rigorous project-based curriculum and a safe, caring community in which to learn.
By developing the whole person - academically, professionally and personally -
JDAL will assist students in reaching their full potential.
Working from Home Requires Approval
As you may already know, JDAL will not offer online project based learning next school year. We did our best to provide this option this school year, but we are just not set up to provide online project based instruction.
This means that we will no longer offer the "work from home" option that some families have requested throughout this year for various reasons. Unfortunately, many students who have requested to work from home were marked absent due to lack of participation and attendance.
As a result, starting immediately, this option is no longer available to our on campus students unless it is pre-approved by Ms. Jen. This approval will require a doctor's note. We hope to see students on campus as they are able. If students are ill, please call the main office to excuse them from the day.
Thank you,
Ms. Jen

Cell Phone Concerns
Staff are please asking for your help in reminding your student of the expectation for cell phones. We are doing the best we can to talk with students and remind them of the expectation, but your reinforcement at home is greatly appreciated.
As a reminder, we have the following consequences in place for continued phone misuse:
1. Student must leave phone in the office when asked.
2. Staff will call a parent/guardian to pick up the phone.
3. Staff will ask parent/guardian to not allow a phone at school or to leave it in the main office all day.
Thank you for your help!

Pre-Act - 9th and 10th Grade Students
On April 4th, JDAL will be administering the PreACT Secure to our 9th & 10th Grade students in the areas of writing, English, reading, math, and science. The PreACT Secure is a required state assessment for ninth and tenth graders. The PreACT Secure is an exam that is used to help students determine readiness for the junior-year ACT which is used for college admission. This achievement data from this assessment is used across the state, district, and at the school level to compare student achievement.
All Freshmen and Sophomores should report to school at the normal time. They will be dismissed at the end of the regularly scheduled school day but can leave earlier if a parent/guardian calls to dismiss them. Students in grades 11 and 12 do not need to report to the school campus on this day and are expected to participate in asynchronous learning.
Please take a few moments to review this schedule with your child. PreACT Secure assessments are taken on student Chromebooks. It is essential that students come prepared with the Chromebook fully charged. Any assistance from families to ensure that students charge their devices would be appreciated.
