Mazie Hirono
is a woman of many firsts: first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Hawaii, first Asian American woman in the Senate, first Japanese-born senator and first Buddhist to serve in Congress. In 1959, when Hawaii became a state, Hirono became a U.S. citizen. Her interest in politics started as a psychology student at the University of Hawaii protesting the Vietnam War. She threw herself into working on political campaigns. After earning a law degree at Georgetown University, one of the state legislators she had campaigned for tapped her as his replacement. She served more than a decade in the Hawaii State House and then as Lieutenant Governor. She entered the national stage in 2006 by winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and in 2012 by becoming a U.S. Senator. In 2017, she was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer, but that did not slow her down. In fact, it fueled her fight for affordable health care. She is also known for strengthening consumer protections, public education, affordable housing and digital literacy.
Kalpana Chawla
In 1997, NASA astronaut and mechanical engineer Kalpana Chawla made history as the first woman of Indian origin to go into space. She worked as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator aboard the Space Shuttle Colombia. In 2003, during her second mission to space, Chawla tragically died, along with her six crewmates, when the Colombia disintegrated during re-entry. She posthumously received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is of Samoan descent, has captured the world’s attention since his early days as one of the greatest professional wrestlers. He then pivoted into acting, starring in films such as The Scorpion King, Moana, and various films in The Fast and the Furious franchise. He is now one of the highest-grossing actors in Hollywood and was even named one of the world’s most influential people by Time magazine.
