Fulton Science Academy
WEEK OF september 14, 2015
Dear FSA Students, Faculty and Parents,
A wonderful time was enjoyed by students, parents, grandparents, and teachers last Sunday lunchtime. It began with a school tour followed by a luncheon for grandparents of our students, school video and advices from our grandparents to our students during National Grandparents Weekend on Sunday, September 13, 2015.
This day had a threefold purpose:
* To honor grandparents
* To give grandparents an opportunity to get more information about their grandchildren’s school
* To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer
Thank you to everyone who attended. Please see some pictures here:

Living With Intensity: Understanding the the Gifted Child – Webinar with Dr. Susan Daniels
We have been informed about this very helpful webinar by one of our wonderful parents, Dr. Laura Rencher. Please see it here:
Monday, September 28, 2015, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (Pacific Time).
In this webinar, Dr. Susan Daniels will explore the overexcitabilities and complex nature of the gifted child. Overexcitabiities (OEs) – psychomotor, sensual, intellectual, imaginational, and emotional – are central to the personality, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional development of the gifted. Overexcitabilities confer certain advantages for gifted development and at the same time render the gifted vulnerable to being misunderstood, and potentially, misidentified. We will address the advantages and the challenges associated with overexcitability along with strategies for helping gifted children modulate their OEs and channel these energies most positively.
Dr. Susan Daniels is co-founder and Educational Director of Summit Center as well as Professor of Educational Psychology and Counseling at California State University – San Bernardino. Dr. Daniels is an internationally recognized expert in the field of gifted education and co-author of “Living with Intensity” (Great Potential Press, 2008).
$40 for unlimited viewing via your browser. If you are unable to join a webinar live, you can register now and view the recorded webinar later. Take $10 if you register for more than one webinar with discount code “multi.” Click to register for “Living with Intensity”.
NOTE: Webinar registration does not currently work on the Safari browser. Please use Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, or Opera to register.

FSA IS A BIG FAMILY THROUGH HOME VISITS!
Experience and research from all over the United States shows that the interaction with the student’s family at their home is a very effective way to help student’s academic and behavioral progress.
Here are some feedbacks from our parents:
“Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
“We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
“Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
“We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student's attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
How can you schedule a home visit?
Very simple. Please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org and give us three available dates for your child's home visit program. We will get back to you and confirm a date. Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes.
For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to junal@fultonscienceacademy.org. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends except Sunday mornings.

We will also have a work day this Saturday from noon to 3PM. If you are available and would like to help, please email Gloria Stathos (gstathos@fultonscienceacademy.org)
PVO Requests
The Parent Volunteer Organization would like to invite you to lend a hand:
Please consider helping during lunch time.
The students and faculty need assistance in the FSAPS cafeteria from 10:10 - 1:25 pm. You would be assisting students and teachers by handing out lunches, napkins and cutlery, helping younger children with opening bottles and jars, and heating up lunches brought from home.
If you can assist for some or all of the lunch periods, please enter your name in the VolunteerSpot organizer. We have broken down the time into one-hour shifts for your convenience.
Early Dismissal Procedure change
Due to the increased size of the student body, there will no longer be early dismissal available between 3:00 and 3:30. If you need your children early, please plan of picking them up prior to 3:00 pm so that we can protect instructional time for our students. Thank you for your cooperation on this important matter.
3:45- 4:20 is club time, during this period teachers and students are focused on their activity and are unlikely to check for dismissal car pool numbers, so to avoid waiting longer than anticipated please consider taking them during first dismissal to avoid disruption.

Elementary Science Olympiad needs your help!
Elementary Science Olympiad is searching for parent coaches! Head coaches Ms. Minor and Ms. Przedpelski are looking forward to another great year with the students who have been chosen to be a part of this Academic Team. However, we are still in need of coaches for some of our events.
Please take a moment to read through the information about the events below that are in need of a coach. Send an e-mail to eso@fultonscienceacademy.org if you would be interested in volunteering your time one afternoon a week (Monday or Wednesday) from 3:30-4:30pm to coach for Elementary Science Olympiad.
If you think you may be interested, but have some questions about what being an ESO coach means... please send an e-mail to eso@fultonscienceacademy.org and we will answer any and all questions you might have!
Events still needing a coach:
Barge Building – Each team will construct a barge of aluminum foil that can support a cargo. They will predict the amount of cargo the barge can hold and then load cargo until the barge takes on water.
Grasp a Graph – Each student will be asked to analyze a group of different graphs and later to organize some data into a graph.
Save Our Earth - Participants learn about different environmental problems and perform simple lab tests to determine problems, such as acid rain, in the environment.
Again, if you have any questions, or if any of these events look like something you would be interested in coaching - please let me know! We are so appreciative of our parent volunteers!
