Engineering Classes Bring Back the Boat Races!
Over the past month, students in the PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design course have been designing, building, and testing a cardboard boat that is able to go down and back the length of the Westifled Aquatic Center pool while holding two students at a time. Over the past month, the students have had to understand and calculate mass, density, volume, and buoyancy. The main caveat with this project is that they can only build their boats out of cardboard and four rolls of packing tape.
On race day, the students walked the boats over to the pool and showed off their designs. The event is a double-elimination head-to-head race. The students' objective is to survive and advance through the bracket, while Mr. Kosmoski and Mr. Marley's objective is to not get pushed into the pool. The first-period class winner was Hopes and Dreams, the team made up of Owen Hall, John Alberta, Andrew Lents, Daryn Grover, and Kerollos Sabit. The fifth-period class winner was Row Bots, the team made up of Timothy Wallwork, Owen Silveus, Jonnathan Sanchez, Emma Beudot, and Jaxon Miller.
