Highland Happenings

December 2019

Standard Time, Winter Time, Normal Time...

... Did you know that all these times are when Daylight Saving Time is not in use?

Well, clocks might have turned back an hour, but I am pleased to note that we finished strong this fall, garnering many accomplishments in and out of the classroom. Thank you to our teachers and staff who devote many hours beyond the school day to support an active school community. Every evening and weekend students compete, volunteer, and represent PLAID in our community.

When we return from Thanksgiving , we have less than three weeks before final exams. Our annual "Cookies, Cocoa and Cram" student study session will on December 16th from 2:30 - 5:30 pm, and transportation will be provided. Locations and study sessions will be posted around school and listed in the bulletin.

Even as we prepare for finals, students will compete at Mock Trial (12/11), and they will perform at a Choir Concert (12/10) and Instrumental Music Concert (12/12).

Christmas Break is from December 21 - January 5, 2020. The office will be closed with the exception of December 31st for payroll checks. We return to school Monday, January 6th.

See you in 2020!

College Readiness Testing by the Numbers

Did you know?

Norma Procell is coordinating our College Board/Advanced Placement testing this year. Here are fall participation numbers at a glance:

  • Over 800 students pre-ordered an AP exam, doubling the number of exams ordered during the 2018-2019 school year;
  • Almost 200 students took the SAT;
  • Over 260 students took the PSAT (mostly 11th graders);
  • Over 500 10th graders took the Pre-ACT.

That is how we "plaid up!"

AP World History

Nichol Thomas's class co-constructs Success Criteria for a writing task. Students used the criteria to give each other feedback. If you have questions about this strategy, please feel free to contact Nichol in room 4H.

  • Cleanliness of the boys restrooms
  • Orange chicken sandwich ("Why is it so orange?")
  • Slow security response to restroom escorts- Students to form ad hoc committee
  • Restroom door in boys restroom always broken (vandalism)
  • Crowding at the south gate at the end of the school day- please open the large gate!
  • Trash on or near tennis courts
  • Drug use on campus and in classrooms
  • Second hand smoke from vape pens- Students wondered if teachers could receive awareness training :)
