About this Presentation
Day 2, Retain and Apply! Building and Reinforcing Math Understanding
Teachers often find that they are teaching to students who lack the necessary skills and understanding needed to make progress. Teachers ask, “Shouldn’t the students already know some of this content from previous years? How can I be expected to teach this year’s standards when I have to re-teach last year’s standards?”
The focus of this workshop will be on strategies that both deepen understanding and check for understanding in the moment and over time. Participants will also learn how to teach the critical areas from the Common Core in a way that makes them stick.
Teachers will leave the workshop with several strategies that put students in the role of both problem solver and explainer. There will be time in the workshop to practice each strategy as well as receive and develop additional materials.
Primary Strategies: 1 Penny Whiteboards; Pepper Cards; Quiz Quiz Trade Cards
Recommended for Grades 2-8.
Outcomes
As a result of attending, teachers will:
- be able to use 1 Penny Whiteboards, Pepper Cards, and Quiz Quiz Trade Cards effectively;
- describe 3-6 other strategies to improve student engagement, build rigorous assessment, and make learning stick in their classroom;
- receive and create new materials to support the implementation of the strategies.
