FSSD Winter Update
Calendar and Strategic Plan approved by School Board
2019-2020 School Calendar Now Available
The Franklin Special School District Board of Education approved the 2019-2020 School Calendar at its January 14, 2019, meeting.
Here are some highlights:
- The 2019-2020 calendar includes 87 instructional days in the first semester and 90 in the second.
- There are six Early Dismissal Days during the year when students are dismissed 3 hours early. This time is necessary for school principals and teachers to work on your child’s student data, determine progress, prepare for curriculum updates and plan for instruction with grade-level and subject area teams, as well as engage in professional learning opportunities. As always, MAC will be available for after-school care on these days.
- Professional Learning and Administrative Days are those days when students are not in school so teachers and administrators can meet in grade-level and subject area teams, review student data, receive the latest updates on curriculum changes, learn improved ways to deliver instruction, and complete necessary work and reports.
In developing the school calendar, the district takes the following into consideration:
- Input from Stakeholders: A large committee with representation from many stakeholder groups across the district provides general guidance to the Associate Director of Schools for Teaching and Learning who coordinates the calendar work. The committee includes teachers, school administrator, paraprofessionals, representatives from the FSSD Education Association and PTO, as well as Central Office administrators and staff, who help to formulate a draft calendar, knowing there are some non-negotiable state requirements. The committee members focus all work through the calendar design process on two guiding concerns: What is best for teaching and learning and what is best for students and families. Once a working draft is created, the committee members gather to review it, offer feedback and/or make modifications. From this feedback, a final draft is formulated. The Director of Schools is engaged in this process throughout the various stages and ultimately recommends a final calendar to the School Board.
- Correlation to the Williamson County Schools calendar: Because we have many families with children in both the FSSD and Williamson County Schools, the district tries to correlate its calendar, as much as possible, to the Williamson County Schools calendar.
- Uninterrupted Instruction: One of the primary considerations in developing the calendar is to purposefully create uninterrupted instructional periods throughout the course of the year.
FSSD Strategic Plan Approved by Board
Reach 2024 includes strategies to achieve these four major goals:
- Literacy: By 2024, FSSD will achieve a 75% proficiency level on the state achievement measure (TNReady) and a Level 5 on the state growth measure (TVAAS).
- Student Well-Being: By 2024, the FSSD will increase support for students' mental, emotional and behavioral health, which will be evidenced by annual reviews of each strategy to determine change, expansion and documentation of support.
- College and Career Readiness: By 2024, students will be able to identify and develop their strengths and interests to better prepare them for college and career.
- Equity in Facilities: By 2024, all campuses will have equitable and appropriate spaces and systems in place to support the FSSD's mission to foster academic, social, emotional, physical, and creative development in each student.
