"Our Teachers are Leading the Nation" Chancellor Everts write for Inside Appalachian
Dr. Jim Brooks ’85 ’97 ’11 was one of five U.S. educators inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame, Class of 2012. Photo by Marie Freeman This year, Appalachian celebrates its 50th year as a university. From our beginnings in 1899 as Watauga Academy, we have excelled at preparing our students to teach — and to be the best at what they do.
Appalachian continues to lead the nation in the number of alumni who have earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), with 616 additional teachers gaining the endorsement in 2017. That is a statistic for which we can be extremely proud.
Our alumni are having immeasurable impact in classrooms across this nation. We respect and encourage those students who are the teachers of tomorrow, and applaud the faculty and staff who are preparing them for the task.

The following days after a school shooting...what does a teacher do and say?
There are no words with the recent school shooting last week. I am sure your social media has been overwhelmed with numerous comments about this tragic event. As future teachers and current students, I know you are filled with so many emotions. I will never forget where I was and what I was doing on April 20, 1999 when the Columbine school shooting occurred and how our safety in schools were challenged and changed forever. I still don't have the right lesson plan following a school shooting or the perfect explanation to kindergarteners why we have to practice a lock down drill. It is sad that I will continue to search for these resources...I encourage you to look at all factors and issues with this topic.

Dance Marathon Information
We hope you’re having a great week! Just a couple of updates and reminders:
Morale Dancer tickets are now on sale! Morale dancers come to Dance Marathon for the last 3-4 hours to make sure the energy is kept up and the dancers keep moving! This is a great opportunity for those that are unable to be at Dance Marathon all day but still want to participate. Make sure to head to the ACT Office to pick up a ticket! Also, if you are still fundraising you are able to go to the ACT Office, pick up Morale Dancer tickets, and sell those to your friends! The money will go toward your fundraising efforts! Stop by the ACT Office to get those or if you have any questions.
If you are registered MARK YOUR CALENDARS because DM is Saturday, the 24th!!! We are so, so excited! The themes that they have announced thus far are Camp, Under the Sea, and Futuristic vs. Prehistoric! The last theme should be ‘t-shirt’ which is essentially just everyone wearing their DM t-shirt that they get that day! If you’re struggling to find things that fit these themes make sure to go by GoodWill, Rams Rack, or any other local thrift store! They will most definitely have items that will help you fit the theme.
Again, we are so excited for next weekend, the 24th! It’s going to be a great experience and we know everyone is going to have a great time. We want to thank everyone for the effort that they have put into this- these organizations have already expressed their gratitude and are so thankful!
