Pancakes & Pajamas Party!
Make sure all of your students have completed the Diagnostics for math and reading before the deadline on Wednesday, January 29th. After that date, we will take a look at our building score and class scores to see if we have reached our goals. At that time, I will let you know who gets to participate in our Pancakes & Pajamas Party.
Our building goals are...50% in ELA & 40% in Math. If we meet these goals, everyone will participate in our pajama day. Anyone that shows growth will participate in our pancakes party. If they show growth in both math and reading, s/he will get 2 pancakes. If they only show growth in one area, they will get one pancake. Any questions?
After the iReady Diagnostic test:
Celebrate individual, class and building success
Track new score on student data page
All students need to have a form for tracking their progress on iReady. If you have a great form that you wouldn’t mind sharing, please send it to me and I will make a folder for everyone to access.

Using Running Records to Make Instructional Decisions:
“Many teachers are required to take formal running records to assess each student’s reading level. Spending a few minutes listening to a child read in a one-on-one-setting is one of the most powerful assessment tools you have available to you as a teacher of young readers. Running records are often scored by computing the student’s accuracy level. However, they also tell you if the student monitors, rereads, and self-corrects. By looking for trends in the student’s errors, you can learn what strategic actions the student uses to problem-solve unfamiliar words. Since the student reads aloud, you will be able to assess fluency, intonation, and expression.
Many teachers take a running record to determine if the student is ready to tackle a text at a higher level. If you use an unfamiliar text to make acceleration decisions, keep in mind that the student will be reading that higher text level with teacher support. During guided reading, the teacher provides a book introduction that pre-teaches a few unfamiliar words. Additionally, the teacher confers with individual students and prompts for strategic activity. A student who reads an unfamiliar text with 90-94% accuracy and some comprehension is certainly ready to read that text level and maybe one text higher during guided reading. Go beyond the accuracy level and ask yourself, “What do I know about this reader and how will I use that knowledge to guide my instructional next steps?” Running records give much more information than a text level. If you analyze the student’s reading errors and behaviors, the running record can tell you what to teach next during guided reading.”

Literacy Tips: http://www.janrichardsonguidedreading.com/literacy-tips
Students need to be reading at an instructional level during guided reading. If running records are consistently between 95%-100%, move them up a level. Take a look at your Profile sheet to see if you need to move up a lesson plan format (Emergent, Early, Instructional, Fluent).
Easy text level: 95%-100%
Instructional text level: 90%-94%
Hard text level: 89% and below
Pineapple Calendar~This quarter we will try something new...during one TWW we will go visit a colleagues classroom for 15 minutes and then come back together to debrief. We will look at classroom organization, student engagement, classroom management, etc. Depending on the time of day will determine what subject area we will observe. The goal is to get some ideas to take back to your classroom and to see how students are being engaged in other classrooms. The pineapple magnet will still be moved from classroom to classroom each week for other observations if desired.
TWW~Agendas are linked. See the agenda for items to bring and discussions to prepare for.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in your classroom.
