May is Get Caught Reading Month!
GET CAUGHT READING MONTH
There is no better challenge than Get Caught Reading Month in May. All month long, wherever you go, the campaign challenges every one of all ages to get caught reading!
Here are some great tips to be prepared to read all month long.
- Tuck magazines into your bag. Anytime you have some free time you will have something to read.
- Place books for all ages in the car. Everyone will have something to read. Older children can read to those who haven’t mastered the skill.
- Unplug for the month. Then stop by the library and pick out the latest bestseller or classic on your reading list.
- Charge up the digital reader’s battery and load it up. Many classics have been made available for a small fee or no cost.
- Get caught reading to children. Find a snug spot and create a routine that carries on throughout the year.
- Include a book in every room in the house.
- Encourage reading during stressful times as a way to distract the mind away from worries and to refocus.
- Read outdoors in a park after a walk.
HOW TO OBSERVE
It’s simple – get caught reading. However, the campaign doesn’t stop there. It encourages a life-long enjoyment of reading. Kick back with an article, book, magazine you enjoy and read. Use #GetCaughtReadingMonth to share on social media.
Science and Social Studies
May is the perfect time to use nature as a learning tool. Take a nature walk with your child. Have them pick a flower/plant, and ask the following:
Observe without touching
Count the different parts of the plant
Draw the plant
Have the child ask questions about his/her wonderings, write them down and research the answers together.
Every few days, take a look at the plant to see if anything has changed. Are the leaves still pointing the same way? Does the plant look different than your picture? Why do you think it looks different?
These small conversations develops vocabulary, peeks interests in new topics, and invites your child to discover new things! Clink link below to hear a read aloud for the story Sophie's Squash.

Fast Facts
Most of us grew up in an era where drilling flashcards was the best way to memorize our facts and know them fluently. Did you know that there are other fun ways to help your child practice so it doesn't feel like a chore? Play some games with your children that will allow your child to have some fun while playing with YOU! This is a win-win for students and their families too!
Click on the video below to watch two games that use only a deck of cards to help your child learn their basic addition facts more quickly and have fun while doing it! You can easily modify this game for younger children by asking them to find numbers instead of sums. ENJOY!
