WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Arrival and Dismissal
I want to commend each and every one of you as we have adapted to a new drop-off and pick-up procedures. We have been timing drop-off and pick up and have noticed that is taking roughly the same amount of time even considering we have many more car riders this year than in previous years.
A couple of notes:
- As many cars have already done, please continue to loop through the parking lot during arrival and drop-off. The more cars that we are able to get on school grounds will help alleviate backup onto residential streets. (See map below)
- Please stay in the car during arrival and dismissal as it will maintain the flow of traffic unless your child requires assistance buckling up in a car seat. If you need to get out of your car, please park in the back lot or the visitor parking.
- If we back up onto the residential streets, please be courteous to other drivers and resident's driveways.
Parent Teacher Conferences
A message from our Parent Mentor, Teresa Karsnak:
I wanted to welcome you back to one of craziest school years I have ever been a part of! I have been the Parent Mentor for SCS for 19 years and wanted to share my information with you.
A Parent Mentor provides support to families of students with disabilities, at risk , on a 504 Plan and the school district staff who serve the students.
Parent Mentors work to support the relationship between the family of a child with a disability and the school.
Ohio is the only state to have a Parent Mentor and our funding comes from a grant from The Ohio Department of Education.
All Parent Mentors have a child with a disability so we understand the parent’s struggle in the world of special education.
Parent Mentors:
Guide families through the special education process
Help families understand their rights and responsibilities
Attend IEP/ETR meeting with parents
Provide resources and information to families and the child’s staff/school
Listen and support families and teachers on an individual basis
Offer information on workshops and speakers for families.
All Parent Mentor services are free of charge and are here to support you and your child..
Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns or would like more information. I look forward to hearing from you!

Iowa/CoGAT testing.
The State of Ohio requires all public school districts to provide whole-grade screenings for the purposes of gifted identification in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability reading/writing, specific academic ability mathematics and creative thinking ability once during the K-2 grade band and once again during the 3-6 grade band. Districts must use assessments approved for gifted identification in order to meet this requirement. Students in grades 2, and 4 will be taking these national standardized tests to gain information about his/her abilities in the classroom during the week of October 5th.
Second and fourth-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test, or CogAT. This test is used to measure overall cognitive and reasoning abilities that can guide classroom and instruction planning efforts based on students’ individual ability levels. The CogAT also provides a measure of cognitive ability that can identify students who meet the State’s definition of Superior Cognitive ability.
Grades 2 and 4 students will also complete the Iowa Assessments. The primary purpose of this test is for instructional development so teachers can identify where the skills of individual students are most and least developed and adapt curriculum and instruction accordingly. The Iowa will measure content-specific skills in the areas of reading and math for second, and fourth grade. The Iowa provides a measure of academic ability that can identify students who meet the State’s definition of superior Specific Academic ability.
These are not tests that students can study for, nor should they be nervous to take them. They will not count as a grade and will be used to better assist teachers in meeting the needs of students. After the results are returned to the District, each student/family will receive a copy of the scores with a report highlighting student’s strengths and areas on which to continue to build.
