Lil Steamer Families --
"Every home is a university and the parents are the teachers."
- Mahatma Gandhi
The above quote resonates with me quite well as I look back on my childhood. I was fortunate to be the youngest (and favorite!) of five children, so I had more than just parents as teachers. My mother and oldest brother, TJ, certainly spent a lot of time with me helping in the kitchen. I believe it's why I enjoy cooking as much as I do. It brings comfort, familiarity, and joy to my life.
Pops has always been quite the craftsman and a skilled woodworker. He learned working with his father as they built several homes in Fulton. Unfortunately for me, I took more to technology skills growing up than trade skills, so I severely lack handyman skills!
As I reflect on that quote by Gandhi, I wish Pops had been a little more stubborn in having me learn new skills. Yes, I was a stubborn kiddo who would have resisted the opportunity as well, but it would have benefited me in the long run.
A conversation with a colleague recently showed another skill I lack: sewing. That's right. I have no idea how to replace a button or how to hem pants that are too long for me (which is pretty much all of them, haha!). I still call mother for that, which is good and bad. It's good that she still supports her favorite baby boy. It's bad that a grown man doesn't have simple sewing skills.
There are so many opportunities for learning outside of the educational academic curriculum. And, like me, you probably wish someone would have taught you something when you were younger. In addition to your own kiddos, there are plenty of other nieces/nephews, grandkids, or neighbors that could certainly benefit from your shared wisdom.
So, here's your weekend question to ponder: When's the last time you taught a useful skill to a kiddo that wasn't covered at school?
Have an amazing weekend!

Symptom Screenings Changing After Spring Break
Following spring break, the school district will no longer be conducting temperature checks as symptom screenings. Please continue to be vigilant and screening your children and notifying the schools of any symptoms that may arise.

It’s important that children know how to express their anger and frustrations in an appropriate way. Here are some appropriate ways for them to do that:
-Taking some deep breaths
-Asking for help
-Walking away and taking time out
-Talking with a grown up about what is happening
-Asking for a hug
-Describing how they feel
-Taking time to relax before trying again
