"Cause of eating Disorders"

  • low self-esteem- Not very confident
  • Felling of helplessness- cant do anything for their selves
  • Intense dissatisfaction- deep depression

Anorexia

Anorexia- is a complex eating disorder with 3 key features:

  • refusal to maintain a healthy body weight
  • an intense fear of gaining weight
  • a distorted body image

Symptoms

  • dieting despite being thin
  • pretending to eat or lie about it
  • weight loss
  • feeling fat when under weight
  • Fixation on body image

Long term effects

  • severe mood swings; depression
  • lack of energy and weakness
  • slow thinking; poor memory
  • dry, yellowish skin and brittle nails
  • Growth of fine hair all over the body and face

Bulimia

Bulimia- eating disorder characterized by frequent episodes of binge eating, fallowed by frantic effort to avoid gaining weight

* Symptoms

  1. Lack of control of eating
  2. Eating unusual amounts of large food
  3. Disappearance of food
  4. smell of vomit
  5. excessive exercise
  6. puffy "chipmunk" cheeks

Long term effects

  • weigh gain
  • abdominal pain, bloat
  • swelling of hands and feet
  • chronic sore throat
  • Acid reflex or ulcers
  • loss of menstrual periods

Binge Eating

Binge Eating- compulsive overeating

* symptoms

  • inability to stop eating
  • eating even if full
  • stress eating
  • feeling numb while binging
  • never feeling satisfied
  • feeling guilty and disgusted after over eating

Long term effect

  • cardiovascular disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • arthritis
  • social isolation and loneliness
  • Depression or anxiety
