Hello Hampshire High,

As of now, we will begin this week with a 2 hour delay due to incoming weather in the morning (this will be updated as needed first thing in the morning so be prepared).


Last week was an awesome week at HHS...we had our students back in school, even if it was only for a day or two! The school board will discuss Monday how we will move forward...A/B schedule, 4-1 schedule, or something else. I am hoping we go back to the 4-1 schedule as we need our students back in the building as soon as possible. I went by classrooms to welcome back our students and ask them what has been their biggest challenge while on remote learning the past three months. Their responses were, "can't focus", "poor internet", "lost motivation", "gave up". Once again, we need our students back in school!


It is no secret, we had a very tough and challenging first semester in various ways. Second semester we continue to face challenges and tough times, but I believe each week we get stronger and learn a lot about ourselves...together we will get through this!


I had the opportunity to review data from first semester and like most schools across the country, students are struggling with virtual learning. At HHS, we had 31% of our students receive one or more Fs at the end of the first semester. We are offering several opportunities for students to turn things around through credit recovery or repeating the course if it is required for graduation. If all goes well we will be hosting "5th Block" starting March 1st at HHS. Monday through Thursday from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM based on 1st semester performance, students will be able to stay after school for additional academic support. We will provide food and transportation. Students, please contact your school counselor today to see if you qualify for "5th Block". I am excited that we have the support from the board office to offer our students this option!


Now, let's brag about some outstanding academic student achievement...46% of our students earned a 3.0 or above GPA and 22% of those students earned a 4.0 or above GPA...WOW!!! Yes, great things are also happening at HHS during this pandemic...well done students, we are so proud of you, keep up the GREAT work!!!


Students and parents/guardians, I know you get tired of hearing me say this, but we MUST have our students during virtual learning; communicate with all teachers more than once each week, join their TEAMS meetings, and try their best on all assignments in Schoology. If you have transportation, you can make arrangements with your teachers to come in on Virtual Fridays for additional academic support...please take advantage of this opportunity!


Although we continue to focus on academics, it is not the only thing that I am concerned about. I am also concerned about what is going on with our students socially and emotionally...I am worried about our kids mental health during this pandemic. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our school counselors, myself, or other staff members at HHS if you need help!


Did You Know that February 22nd is National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day??? We greatly appreciate our school bus drivers for keeping our students safe each day!!!

2nd Semester: Additional Academic Support


The 2020-2021 school year continues to be a challenge for all. We must be proactive in our approach in order to turn things around if we want to reduce the negative impact our failures will have on HHS (graduation rate, drop-out rate, poor attendance, discipline issues, mental health, increased class sizes, reduced electives).

Our goal is to try and recover lost credits due to failures from first semester and provide additional academic support second semester to help students that are already behind. We want to remove any barriers and excuses so our students have all the opportunities and resources to be successful, if they put forth the necessary effort.

We have the programs in place, now we need to get students to stay and take advantage of these opportunities. Once again, it all comes down to communication and effort!


Here are several opportunities and resources we are providing students second semester…


“5th Block”: Begins Monday, March 1st and will run Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 after-school. We will provide a meal and transportation (2 buses going in opposite direction on route 50) each day. Virtual students may attend if they have transportation to school. Students do not need to attend all 4 days, it is based on their academic situation. A link will be provided to all students in Schoology so they can sign-up each day.


After-School Program: Additional Academic Support Spring 2021 (office.com)


· Credit Recovery: focus on failures and graduation requirements (1st semester)

· Tutoring: focus on catch-up/make-up work (2nd semester)

Additional Academic Support:

· Virtual Fridays: students and teachers can make arrangements to come in based on need (meals provided), students must provide their own transportation, communicate with other teachers so student can visit all teachers if needed. Especially virtual students that are struggling.

· “Red” Weeks: First of all, let’s hope we don’t have any more “Red” Weeks! If we do, students and teachers can make arrangements to come in based on need (meals provided), students can catch the bus at their normal time and location, communicate with other teachers so student can visit all teachers if needed. Especially virtual students that are struggling.

Hampshire Highlights...

- Congrats to DECA for being recognized as an Outstanding School-Based Enterprise (SBE)...The HHS Agency was among 246 school-based enterprises and 1 of 2 in the state of WV achieving GOLD for the 2020-2021 school year and will be recognized this April at the International Career Development Conference!!! DECA members who contributed to the certification were Camryn Downs and Kellsey Savage with the assistance of chapter advisor, Mrs. Amy Crites...way to go!!!


- Congrats to the following football players for being selected to the Potomac Highlands All-Area Team...Trevor Sardo (WR) = 1st team (3 years in a row), Sam Moreland (OL) = 1st team & (DL) = 2nd team, Nathan Sions (DL) = 1st team, Alex Pritts (LB) = 1st team, Asher Landis (DB) = 1st team, Christian Hicks (P) = 1st team, and Zack Hill (OL) = 2nd team...way to go Trojans!!!

Dear Current High School Seniors:


Do paid research this summer! Network with faculty and students and get acquainted with collegiate resources. The NSF-funded First2 Network offers a unique opportunity for current high school seniors who are first-generation college students or from an underrepresented group in West Virginia who plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Apply today for a spot in one of eight different 2-week Summer Immersive Research Experiences sites in West Virginia!

Curbside Meals:

Curbside Pick Up or Delivery Of Meals-- February 26, 2021

Friday, February 26, 2021 students may pick up meals or have meals delivered. Curbside meals will be available from 10:00-12:00 at all schools. Meals will be delivered beginning at 9:30 am. Please register your child on the Hampshire County Board of Education website if you are interested in receiving meals.


Reminder

Curbside meals are available at all nine schools Monday- Thursday when school is in session. Please check with your schools for the times for curbside pick up.

Friday Meals:

Register now on the Hampshire County Board of Education website for Friday meals. Curbside or delivered.
