Principal's message
It has been a wonderful start to the school year. Our Sterling staff has been busy preparing and delivering instruction to meet the needs of all students in their classes. Students have also been busy participating in assessments required by LCPS and the state, and they've been so diligent in their work ethic! Families will receive notice from teachers if their child is still working to meet the grade level expectations for this point in the year. Your partnership continues to be so important, so keep working with your child at home by asking about their day, what they learned, and by reading with them nightly. Every night counts! Below you'll find updates from our specialists. Please continue to look for and review the weekly updates you receive from your child's classroom teacher(s).
Sincerely,
Jennifer Short
HEALTH OFFICE NEWS
ART NEWS
We've gotten off to a great start in the Art room! Kindergarten is studying basic shapes. They've used premade shapes to create a picture and have started drawing their own shapes. Soon they will be stacking shapes to draw a castle. First grade has just finished work on a collage of a fish in its habitat. They painted the habitat on day 1, and on day 2, they are drawing, cutting, and gluing the fish into its home. Most took advantage of the option to stamp bubbles to add a little extra detail to their work.

MUSIC NEWS
We have been having fun working on instrument technique and exploration in the music room! After performing a full group drum ensemble, fifth graders worked together in groups to compose and perform their own complementary rhythm ensembles. They were amazing! Second graders are practicing playing the melody of a song on xylophones with proper mallet technique. We love seeing our musicians shine!

PE NEWS
This month has been really cool to see students using teamwork and effective communication. Students pictured here were improving their cooperation skills by creating hula hoop towers and then trying to send teammates through without knocking it over! Challenging but lots of fun!

SEARCH NEWS
SEARCH has begun for grades K – 3. Our Kindergarten, first, and second grade classes enjoyed using analysis and interpretation skills to respond to a series of symbolic language pictures through the beloved “DOT” series. Students were then asked to use their creativity skills to create their own version of the story using symbols. It was fun for the students to try and see if they could figure out what their classmates created. – Mrs. Daniel
