Articles of Confederation

Advantages and Disadvantages

The Articles of Confederation, created by the Continental Congress, was the first constitution of the United States. It was a weak document because the central government did not have much power. I feel the Continental Congress created a weak central government because the states were not ready to become unified. They still wanted to keep their traditions as states.

  • Congress had the power to deal with foreign affairs
  • Set up a legislature but each state only had one vote
  • Was able to build and control an army

  • Did not have the power to tax
  • There was NO national courts
  • Every state had its own money
  • Did not have the power to force states to obey the laws
  • Did not have the power to regulate trade between states
