Davenport's Weekly Update
Week of May 3rd
A Message from the Assistant Principal
Dear Davenport Families,
This week we were met with sad news, along with one of my favorite weeks of the year, Teacher Appreciation Week. On Monday, May 4th, Governor Murphy officially announced that New Jersey schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year. Although many of us had a strong feeling that this news was coming, I would be lying if I did not say that a heavy sadness came over me when I received that first text confirming this new reality.
One afternoon this week I was walking at the EHT Nature Reserve to get some fresh air and exercise when I passed by a Davenport student and her mom (shout out to Valentina in Mrs. Lopusan's class)! Seeing the smiling face of one of our students and feeling how happy we both were to see each other, it was disheartening to know that those in-person interactions will not be happening at school again this year. Then I got home and began to focus on the positive of this week again, the celebration of our AMAZING teachers. This unprecedented experience has shown us the resiliency, love, flexibility, and creativity that our EHT teachers have. This Teacher Appreciation Week was certainly not traditional, but I can honestly say I have never been more proud to be EHT. We will get through this and we will come out stronger on the other side. Mrs. White and I truly cannot thank everyone enough.
Sincerely,
Rachel Casumpang

Earth Day STEAM Engineering Design Process
Third Grade student Julia Lemon completed Mrs. Pettit's Earth Day STEAM project, which you can read about below. Great job, Julia!
ASK: How can I help save the Earth? (Its humans, animals and/or environment?)
I can recycle old things I don’t use .
IMAGINE : Brainstorm! What will you make? How will it help the Earth?
I made a bed for my stuffed animals, it can help because I don't have to ask my mom to buy me a new one.
PLAN: Describe the building procedure or draw your idea.
I used my mom’s empty shoebox. Then I used my blanket from when I was a baby.
CREATE: Make it!
RESULT: Were you successful? Did or will your design work? Why or why not?
Yes, I was. It did because all you need is a blanket and a box .
IMPROVE: What would you do differently if you could redesign your creation?
If I had a bigger box, I would make it big enough so I can fit ALL my stuffed animals.
