Time Frame

1876- 1st Farmer Alliance formed in Lampass, North Texas. Other local "alliance" formed. Low prices for agricultural commodities vs. high prices for the new agricultural machinery.

1880- National Farmers Alliance was formed.

1886- General strike for the 8-hour day on May 1st

1890- Sherman Anti- Trust Act. Used against labor unions for "Restraint of trade"

1891- People's Party was formed out of "alliances"

1892- First national Convention of the People's Party held in Omaha, Nebraska.

1893- Great Depression begins: Eugene Debs organizes American Railway Unions (ARU)

1894- Pullman Strike broken by Federal troops; Coxey's Army marches on the D.C for Federal public works job for unemployed.

1896- Populists support Democratic presidential candidate.

1898- Gold discoveries in Yukon.Populist issue of lack of species.

Social problem of the Populist Movement

Early of 1870s, some farmers had begun to demand lower railroad rates. They also argued that business and the wealthy should bear the burden of taxation.

James B. Weaver- Was a member of the United States House of Representatives and two-time candidate for the President of the United States.

William Jennings Bryan- Was an American orator and politician from Nebraska. 3 times as the Party's candidate for the President of the United States.

Thomas E. Watson- Was an American politician,attorney, newspaper editor and writer from Georgia.

Goals of the Populist Movement

The Populist movement wanted to replace Democrats as the nation's second party by forming a alliance of the farmers of the West and South with industrial workers of East.
