Mock Caldecott unit
We started the unit by reading Hey Black Child together and scoring it on five Caldecott criteria using a system of 1 - 5 (one being the lowest and 5 being the highest) for each category:
- How well was the chosen art technique used?
- How well did they interpret story or theme in their pictures?
- How well does the artistic style fit the story?
- How well is the narrative told through the pictures?
- How suitable is the book for kids?
We then totaled up the points and added to our notes column.
We read the illustrator's note (a true gift because these are usually not included) and looked for the illustrator's art technique on the Copyright page. Oh, and what do you do when the illustrator's technique is not listed on the Copyright page? You Tweet them your question and they write back! See picture below!
Students logged into my Google Classroom assignment and got to work reading and scoring our HMS Mock Caldecott nominees with their elbow buddies.
Once everyone has read and scored all the nominees they will be able to cast their vote.
