SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND MINDFULNESS
This is week two of our mindfulness techniques. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed practice some of the mindfulness techniques below. Coming soon... Visit the Guidance and Counseling website for more techniques and to hear recordings.
Brain Massage : This activity helps us cool down and relax. It is a tool to use at any time we are anxious or worried and need to cool down and focus. This activity is a positive way to manage our emotions, and is also an easy thing to do if we are at home and need a break.
1. Sit up tall and roll your shoulders back.
2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
3. Keeping your eyes closed and your breathing deep tap your fingertips on your forehead, around your eyes , down your cheekbones, on the bridge of your nose, and then on your chin.
Cool Down Breath : This is a great way to support ourselves in a challenging situation. You will need a small every day object like a pen, pencil, eraser, or key to hold in your hand.
1. Sit up tall and roll your shoulders back.
2. Curl you tongue like a straw and suck in air to a slow count of three. Then exhale through your nose to a slow count of three.
3. Now breathe easy and close your eyes. Notice how the object feels in your hand. (Is it heavy or light, rough or smooth).
4. Continue for one minute. Each time your thoughts wander, redirect them back to the object.
Name It and Doodle It! : Activity to help us identify, name, and understand our emotions so that we can be present. You will need a scratch piece of paper and something to write with.
1. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.
2. Notice what thoughts are in your mind (are you feeling happy, relaxed, energetic, tired, sad, vulnerable, scared, angry?) Notice how your body feels.
3. For the next 4 minutes, write or draw something that expresses how you are feeling.
Owning My Own Story Journal : This activity helps us to learn to be compassionate with ourselves and bravely accept our strengths as well as our challenges. You will need a scratch piece of paper and something to write with. Writing prompt: Today, I am telling my story of being strong.
1. Take 30 seconds to silently reflect. Then fold your piece of paper in half.
2. Spend one minute writing key words and ideas for your story on one half of the paper.
3. Take 5 minutes to write or draw your story on the other half of paper.
4. On the back of the paper write the following: I give myself permission not to be perfect. The most important thing I can do each day is try my best. Signed, (your name) and date (today’s date).
