Volunteers for Fairfax
Since March 20th, the Town of Fairfax has implemented a one on one volunteer matching program to help those needing assistance during the Coronavirus pandemic. The program consists of volunteers who are matched with a person in need of grocery shopping, prescription refills, dog walking, and other errands. To sign up for this service, go to www.townoffairfax.org. Also during this time, the Fairfax Food Pantry, which operates at the Fairfax Community Church, 2398 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. is providing food distribution via a drive-through service. The program runs every Saturday, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. There is no proof of income or identification required. The food pantry is part of the SF Marin Food Bank, and is also sponsored by the Fairfax Volunteers. As part of a pilot program, the County of Marin is offering mobile showers on Saturdays from 9-12 at the Fairfax Community Church.
The First Day
On Monday, June 1st, the Marin Healthy Youth Partnership’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is excited to be hosting a virtual community screening of The First Day film. The 47-minute documentary will be followed by Q&A with a local panel including addiction specialist Dr. Jeffery DeVido, TUHSD teacher John Hirsch and Marin high school student and peer advocate Cassidy Rodgers.
The First Day documentary chronicles the life of Chris Herren, a former NBA basketball player, and his struggles with substance use that led to addiction. Chris says, “The focus oftentimes is about the worst day when it comes to speaking about addiction and not the first day. Kids need to understand how this begins rather than how it ends.”
