History of bananas
- Today, Bananas are the fourth most important crop worldwide for developing countries.
- Bananas came from southeast Asia in the beginning. Arab conquerors brought bananas west in 327 B.C. to Africa. Later on they were brought to the Caribbean by the explorers and missionaries.
- At one time bananas were called "banna" and "ghana".
- They are a good source of nutrition. They are high in fiber, vitamin C, and potassium that we need every day to stay healthy.
- The first bananas were brought to the U.S. in the 1870's by Minor Keith. The project cost hundreds of lives, including the lives of his two brothers.
- 55 million tons of bananas are eaten worldwide in a year.
- How they are harvested? Fruit is cut from the bunch.
