Week of October 5th

Dear Fulton Family,

My family and I spent this beautiful fall weekend camping. It was a first for us- it was cold but my kids enjoyed it. We explored some trails, gathered firewood (quite often), and enjoyed one or two stories by the fire. I even dabbled in making s'mores and they turned out to be quite tasty. It was a nice escape from the computer and I can't wait to do it again. If you have any camping tips (especially with kids), please send them my way. :)

Last week, we had a great turn out to our Back to Music Night hosted by Ms. Kershner and Mr. Twigg. We hope that you were able to learn a little more about our music program at Fulton. If you were unable to attend or have questions about Chorus, Band, and/or Orchestra please reach out to Ms. Kershner regarding Chorus (rachel_kershner@hcpss.org) and Mr. Twigg (richard_twigg@hcpss.org) regarding Band and Orchestra. They will be happy to help.

This week in Fulton Happenings, we will be hosing our first Coffee and Chat of the 2020-2021 school year on October 7th from 8:00am-9:00am. This will be a time for parents/guardians to drop in and ask any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you at our FES Coffee House. Mark your Calendars- Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing is this Wednesday!

This Wednesday, October 7th, our 2nd-5th grade students will begin taking MAP. The data from the MAP assessment will help teachers measure where your child is starting the year academically. We also intend to administer MAP in winter and spring to measure how your child’s learning is progressing throughout the year. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly.   • October 7th: 9:00am and 1:00pm MAP-Reading
  • October 14th: 9:00am and 1:00pm MAP-Math

These are both Wednesdays.

We wanted to provide some flexibility to you and your family. As such, students may choose to attend either the morning (9:00am) or afternoon (1:00pm) session. If your child is unable to attend, makeup testing will be offered during asynchronous learning times. Teachers will share Google Meet information and your student’s testing group as we get closer to the October 7th testing date. Due to MAP testing students in 2nd-5th grade, the following adjustments will be made for the weeks of October 7 and 14:

  • No Dreambox assignments will be assigned on Wednesday

  • No Lexia Core5 assignments will be assigned on Wednesday

  • No mathematics task will be assigned on Wednesday

No changes will be made for related arts and science asynchronous assignments.

Please note this is for 2nd-5th grade students only, for Wednesday October 7th and 14th.

The Nora Project

As you may know, we partner with The Nora Project to provide our students learning opportunities around empathy and inclusion. This upcoming Saturday, there Nora Project is hosting their first-ever virtual fundraiser, which will be broadcast on YouTube Live. They have an incredible showcase planned, featuring an all-star lineup of disability artist/activists, including NPR Tiny Desk Contest Winner, violinist and singer/songwriter Gaelynn Lea, renowned comedian and Ted Talker Maysoon Zayid, and the incredibly talented and dynamic singer Lachi. It will give you and your families a great opportunity to discuss disability and differences as a family; if you are interested in learning more, please click here for the details.

A suggestion for managing the Asynchronous Assignments

As a reminder, the three weekly related arts asynchronous assignments can be completed throughout the week, not just on Wednesdays. One suggestion is for families to assign a related arts task to different days of the week. For example, a student in Grade 1 could set up an asynchronous schedule like this:

Schedule Adjustments for Scheduled Early Dismissal Days

HCPSS 2020-2021 calendar includes four scheduled 3-hour early dismissal days:

  • Friday, October 16, 2020
  • Friday, November 6, 2020
  • Monday, November 23, 2020
  • Tuesday, November 24, 2020
The virtual schedules have been adjusted for these scheduled early dismissal days to provide students with synchronous learning for each class. Additionally, both full- and half-day PreK classes will meet on these days using a modified schedule. Please review the Early Dismissal Days revised schedules for all elementary schools here.

Council of Elders

The mission of the Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County is two-fold. To develop, strengthen, guide and advance the educational and cultural well-being of the Black Community of Howard County. To sustain and grow itself as a community of Elders that actively serves to advocate for the Black Community of Howard County in collaboration with parents, educators and other community leaders.

  • March 13 - Suicide Prevention and Substance Abuse 9–10:30 a.m.

Video Instruction Updates

Students' active participation in synchronous (live) instruction sessions is critically important to effective learning. HCPSS DOES NOT allow video recordings of live instruction or photographing of the Google Meet because recorded sessions could hinder students' active class participation, violate privacy rights and accessibility requirements, and other factors. Reminder, you can begin checking out books from our Fulton Library!

Starting October 9th, the Fulton Elementary School Library

will begin curbside pickup of library books.

Things to Know

  • In order for students to put books on hold an account will need to be set up in the Public Access Catalog (PAC). This is a one time step that will require parental help. Directions for setting up the PAC account.

  • Once an account in the PAC has been set up, books can be requested using the following directions. Directions for Requesting Books

  • Curbside pickup will be contactless.

  • Books will be labeled and ordered by last name.

  • We are currently allowing students to request 2 books for pick up. In addition, some books may be listed as NOT AVAILABLE. Students can request to hold "not available" books in order to be put on the waiting list. Books on a hold list will not count as books to be picked up for the week.

  • All book requests need to be submitted in the PAC by Thursday at 8:00 am to be available for pick up on Friday.

  • If you miss the pick up window, we will have your books available for pick up on the following Friday. If they are not picked up by that time, they will be returned for another student to check out.

  • Return bins will be available weekly for returns. All returned books will be quarantined for one week. We will work on the honor system when filling week to week book requests. We trust that you will not check out new books until the previous ones have been returned.

  • Please note: We will be teaching students how to do this in media class during the week of Oct. 5th.

Our first curbside pickup is scheduled for Friday, October 9th from 12:00 - 3:30.
