News from Pier 25
February 5, 2016
Dear Parents,
Next Tuesday, February 9th, is the 100th day of school. Earlier in the week, a note was sent home inviting your UMAC learner to dress as if they are 100 years old. The UMAC team has a few activities planned to celebrate our students being “100 days smarter!” Of course, this is totally optional, but please let me know if you have any questions!
Good Luck to the Honk Jr. cast, choir, and crew! I can’t wait to see the performance with the other UMAC teachers on Saturday!

Writing
This week I met with each of the students individually to begin writing their fairy tale stories! It is so fun to chat with the students about their creative and unique fairy tale twists! All the students have completely a plot line graphic organizer to help their story flow from beginning to end. We will continue drafting our stories next week and as you may have heard, the students will be publishing these stories into hardcover books! More information to come!
Shared Reading
In shared reading we discussed the elements of a folktales while reading Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter. This is the story of two beautiful daughters who react in different ways to the king’s search for a wife. Our team used our a variety of DOK (depth of knowledge) questions to analyze this African tale. It was fun to explore a new genre of text this week!
