Science Team earns top 12 recognition at National Ocean Sciences Bowl

The RMSST Science team has had 5 students competing virtually at NOSB Nationals over the last two weeks with the final round of competition taking place last Sunday morning.

Captain Elizabeth Huynh and team members, Hector Aguirre, Duc Le, Sydney Moodie, and Jackson Meyers, performed wonderfully in this year’s competition. They had our school’s best ever score on the Science Expert Briefing part of the competition and, for the first time, finished in the top 12 after the buzzer and team challenge question rounds, advancing to the elimination rounds. Their final placement was in the 9th -12th place group so they will be receiving some small prizes from the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. Congratulations to these students and their awesome coach Ms. Diana Kennen!

Updates & Announcements

Submitting Excuse Notes & Limiting Unexcused Absences

Excuse notes can be brought to Magnet’s front office or submitted via email to . Please note that excuse notes must be submitted within 3 days of your student’s return to school.

Students must stay home if they are sick and stay home until they have been fever free for a minimum of 24 hours. Additionally, students and staff are required to isolate for 10 days when they receive a positive COVID-19 test.

While understanding it is key to stay home if a student is sick, we also need your partnership in limiting or eliminating unexcused absences. Students, you will not be eligible to exempt your Spring final exams if you have more than 3 unexcused absences. Please ensure that you are coming to school on all days that you are able.

Free & Reduced Meals Application is Open

The Free and Reduced Meals application is now open for all families. Please be aware that state and federal programs may use the RCPS Free and Reduced Meals eligibility to determine who qualifies for assistance through those programs not associated with Rockdale County Public Schools. For this reason, we encourage you to fill out the RCPS Free and Reduced Meals application which is located on our website under District Announcements. Families have until May 27th to complete the application which may be used for benefits given during the next school year. This will not change anything for previously determined benefits and is not needed for meals during the current school year which are provided at no cost to all students. Again, this may determine your eligibility for benefits outside of RCPS that are provided by state and federal programs.

Safety Reminders & COVID-19 Testing

While parents can now opt their student out of required mask wearing, we will continue with the following mitigation measures: frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizer, social distancing when feasible, contact tracing, requiring students and staff to isolate for 10 days when they receive a positive COVID-19 test, and requiring students and staff to quarantine when identified as a close contact. Mrs. Baskett is our primary contact tracer at Magnet. Please reach out via email at or by phone at 770-483-8737 if your student has a positive COVID-19 test or has been identified as a close contact.

Also, RCPS continues to offer free COVID testing Monday through Thursday along with free vaccine events. To learn more about contact tracing, isolation and quarantine guidance, testing and vaccines, please visit the district website at and click on the COVID tab at the top of the page. Thank you for doing your part to keep our students and staff healthy!
