The motto this week is: I make the most out of each experience.
Hello Parents,
This quarter is all about paying attention to our self-talk. However, being positive is often not easy. It can be hard to move from "I can't do this!" to "I can do this!" because it doesn't always feel genuine and we may not believe our own self-talk.
While students may not be ready to believe, "I can do this!" they may be willing to believe:
"Maybe, I can do this!"
or
I can't do this yet, but I will.
Using "maybe" seems like a small change but it can be an important habit to develop because saying "maybe" or "yet" allows you to think more positively - especially when it is hard.
When students use "maybe" in front of negative thoughts, they are making room for better experiences. Positive self-talk doesn't help if we don't believe it. A student may not be ready to go from "Math is frustrating" to "Math is helpful and fun." They will likely not believe their own self-talk. Which is why it is important to take smaller, more believable steps first. Such as moving from:
Homework will take forever.
to
Maybe homework will take forever, or maybe it will go quickly tonight.
or
I'll never understand math.
to
Maybe I will never understand math, but maybe I will!
Start helping your child develop positive self-talk now because small, positive changes make a big difference over time!
All the best to you,
All Things E.Q. - The Discovery of You!
