Book Clubs
Literacy & Social Studies
Last week, we started an abbreviated version of BOOK CLUBS! To prepare for book clubs, we have spent time generating what we believe to be true about speaking and listening, we've practiced being better speakers and listeners while discussing quotes from books, and we've watched videos of book clubs and charted our observations and inferences. Now, we're beginning book club discussions with books written by the talented author and illustrator, Eve Bunting. Please ask your child to share how they plan to make book clubs a meaningful experience for them and their classmates.
PERSONAL NARRATIVES are coming along! This week, we spent time revising by adding transitions to our writing. We're also spending a good bit of time editing for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and indentation of paragraphs. Editing is a challenge for many students. Please join me in setting the expectation for your child that they will ALWAYS write complete sentences that begin with capital letters and end with the appropriate punctuation. Hopefully, students will be ready to publish their narratives by the end of this week.
Grading for CURSIVE writing will be different this nine weeks. Each student will receive one quarterly grade of 100 for completing their cursive writing sheets. Each time they do not turn in their cursive, five points will be deducted from that grade of 100. Additionally, two points will be deducted if they have mechanical issues such as punctuation and/or spelling errors. Thanks in advance for helping your child remember to complete this weekly assignment.
Math & Science
Math
Multiplication, Multiplication, and more Multiplication. Our math workshop has been centered around multiplication. This week we focused on noticing and naming patterns within multiplication. We also started to investigate solving multiplication equations through the use of partial products and the distributive property. We also used the traditional algorithm to multiply one digit and two digit numbers. Chapter 2 is centered around using multiple strategies to multiply whole numbers. Please make sure mathematicians are practicing these strategies at home as well as using their online math resources.
Science
As scientists we have concluded our Landforms and Oceans Unit of Study. Last week we focused on tides, oceans, and currents. Then we will be talked about the effect storms have on inlets, estuaries, beaches, and barrier islands. Please make sure that scientists are reading over their science notes daily. One way to do this is to ask your scientist what they learned in science today, and ask them for a quick reflection. Our new unit of Mixtures & Solutions begins next week.
Environmental Science Fair Updates
Task 2: Develop a testable question or problem, develop a purpose, develop a hypothesis, generate a materials list, and list procedures.
