District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
National Teacher Appreciation Week - May 8 - 12
National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 8-12, 2017 and Tuesday, May 9 is National Teacher Appreciation Day. Beaverton teachers make a profound difference in the lives of nearly 40,000 students in our community.
We are fortunate to have 2,595 teachers working in our classrooms, ensuring a quality education for each and every student, increasing graduation rates and preparing all students for college and career success.
In addition to student achievement, our teachers also excel at helping students grow as individuals, providing them with the support they need to thrive outside the classroom. Carl Jung once said, "One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." Our teachers today will be remembered for years to come for the work they are doing to shape tomorrow's young leaders.
Every day, one can witness our teachers working with dedication and commitment. Please take this opportunity to recognize our devoted teachers in the Beaverton School District.
Inter-District Transfer Information
House Bill 2747 is responsible for legislative changes regarding Inter-District transfers. House Bill 2747 allows School Boards to decide annually by specific date, the number of student transfers into and out of a school district.
The Beaverton School District’s School Board has agreed to NO Inter-District Transfers for the 2017-2018 school year. This decision involves students wanting to transfer INTO, and students wishing to transfer OUT OF, the Beaverton School District.
Exceptions to this decision include hardship requests. A hardship is defined in OAR 581-021-0019 (1) (c). As a result, any family who believes they have a hardship, may send an email stating the specific reasons for their request to the following email address: interdistricttransfer@beaverton.k12.or.us.
If approved by District and school administrators, the Beaverton School District Office will email parents an Inter-District Transfer request form to complete. The final decision will be made once Beaverton School District and the non-resident school district have reviewed the request. If the student is approved, he/she will be approved through grade 12. If the transfer request is denied, the student should plan to enroll in their boundary school.
The Washington County School District’s Inter-District Transfer window is May 1 – May 31, 2017. Final decisions will be communicated to parents after the window has closed.
MID-SCHOOL YEAR RESIDENT STUDENT MOVES: Students who move out of the Beaverton School District after May 31, 2017 may choose to continue attending school where they currently are until June 19, 2018. Students must complete a Mid-School Year Student Move form. Forms are available at the student’s school. Students will be required to apply for an Inter-District Transfer if they want to return for the 2018-2019 school year. There are no guarantees for placement. Students must meet behavior and attendance expectations as stated below.
TRANSFERS INTO AND OUT OF school districts are contingent upon meeting behavior and attendance expectations:
1) Attendance of 92% or greater;
2) No more than one suspension per academic year; no suspension of, or greater than, five days;
3) No expulsions;
4) Timely transportation is the responsibility of the family.
NON-RESIDENT STUDENTS should contact their home school district office for transfer requirements.
Students must complete transfer paperwork at both resident and non-resident school district offices.

Paperless Communications
This fall, the Beaverton School District will be moving to paperless report cards for all middle and high school students. The report cards will be accessed through ParentVue.
In addition, the District will also be moving to online registration and enrollment verification. If you have not activated your ParentVue account, you will need to do that before the fall.
We realize there may be issues with access for some of our parents. Please contact your school for assistance. There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVue account. Please view the FAQ for instructions.
Paperless report cards, registration and enrollment verification offer several benefits. Online registration and enrollment verification will be convenient and efficient for families. Parents of middle and high school students will be able to view grades two to three business days after grading days, rather than wait up to two weeks for a report card to come by mail. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.
Those families who still wish to receive a paper report card in the mail can opt-out. You will also be able to print the report card from home.
The District will be sending out additional communications about these changes throughout the summer and fall.

Planting Peace Poles at Elmonica Elementary
On Friday, April 21, 2017 parent volunteers and fourth and fifth grade students planted six Peace Poles around the Elmonica Elementary School campus.
A Peace Pole is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message May Peace Prevail on Earth on each of its four sides in the 24 languages spoken at Elmonica. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace.
Elmonica’s PTO President, Mark Hutchison, a member of the Downtown Portland Rotary Club who sponsored the Peace Poles, coordinated the planting and worked with students to write messages to the people of 30 years from now that will be stored inside the poles as a time capsule.
Vose Elementary School Construction
A new school is rising out of the ground at Vose Elementary School. Through the fall and winter the construction site has been changing rapidly.
While students and staff are learning and growing at their temporary school on 118th, construction crews are hard at work at the original school site on Denney Road. Despite a very snowy winter, contractor Triplett Wellman has brought in crews on weekends to maintain the fast-paced schedule.
Foundations and underground work are complete and concrete floor slabs have been poured. Precast walls were trucked to the site, crews used cranes to place the walls. Steel installation in nearly complete, wall framing continues and windows are being installed. Within the next few months, the parking lots and landscaping will come together.
Over the summer, Denney Road will be widened to include a bike lane and the traffic signal at King Blvd. will be replaced. The school’s new main entrance will align with the signal, in an effort to ease traffic congestion on Denney Road.
Due to that alignment, the two giant sequoias in front of the school had to be cut down. The wood from the trees is being repurposed and will be used for several artistic and functional items in the new school.
In late July and early August, the interior finishes will be completed and furniture and equipment will be moved into the new building. Staff will settle into the building and be ready to welcome back students when they return to a brand new Vose Elementary School in September.
WE Expect Excellence: Transition Roles for Student Leaders
In the fall of 2017, hundreds of high school students in Beaverton will be shifting schools due to new boundaries. Principals recognized early in the process that this would be a big adjustment and sought out input, feedback and ideas from student leaders.
From participating in vision teams, to performing outreach at other schools, student leaders have contributed to easing the transition for new students.
At Southridge High School, 15 students sat on the vision team to help plan activities. The students represented all walks of life at Southridge. "They were intimately involved with creating our mission statement, core values and talking points as we welcome new families into Southridge," says Principal David Nieslanik. Read more…

Signal-to-Noise is an exciting annual opportunity for students in the Beaverton School District to have their work viewed and evaluated by media professionals. Safe Routes to School – Walk + Bike + Roll Challenge
How many friends can you get to join you in walking, biking and rolling to school?
Walking, biking, scooting and skating to school are great ways to get to school. The Walk+ Roll Challenge Month promotes walking, biking and being active on your trips to and from school for several reasons:
- Teaches safe transportation skills to children
- Increase community traffic safety
- Increase physical activity
- Reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools
- Awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements need to be made
