We have no new COVID-19 cases or close contact quarantines on our campus. With five days of school left, we have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for; however, we need to continue being vigilant, focused, and working together.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT
Science is Cool at Middle School
Hemlock Public School District is proud of our science program. This program is strong and vibrant because of our fantastic staff. Mr. Barrett is one of those treasured teachers.
Mr. Barrett is in his 14th year teaching at Hemlock Middle School. He teaches 8th-grade science, 6th-grade science inquiry/careers, and 7th and 8th-grade physical education. He has also taught 6th and 7th-grade science and was the faculty advisor for NJHS in past years. Mr. Barrett is also the chair of our newly formed reading apprenticeship program. He is very dedicated to the students here at HMS.
Middle School Principal Chase said, "Mr. Barrett is a fantastic educator. He comes to work each day with enthusiasm and drive. He is an unbelievable asset to our middle school staff. We are thankful for his experience and dedication."
Mr. Barrett grew up in St. John’s, MI. He has been married to his wife Amy for 15 years. They have 2 daughters, Elli age 8, and Hadley age 5. This has been his only teaching position. He graduated from CMU in the Winter of 2006 and started teaching here in the Fall of 2007.
Mr. Barrett’s favorite thing about HMS is the students. I come to work every day knowing my students are going to work hard and try their best. His proudest moment outside of education is becoming a father. Educationally speaking, he is proudest when he sees his students become successful once they leave the walls of his classroom.
His hobbies include coaching his daughters’ soccer team, hunting, camping, and cooking. His favorite author is Louis L'aMour and his favorite quote is “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you” – B. B. King
Thank you for everything you do Mr. Barrett! You are a valued staff member in Hemlock Public School District.

Hemlock Honors Reg Rye
The Hemlock Board of Education unanimously voted to name the space that hosts the district’s virtual learning program for students in grades 7-12 the Reg Rye Learning Center at their regular May 2021 meeting. The district will host a grand opening event for the Reg Rye Learning Center on Wednesday, June 2nd at 5:30 PM on the south side of Hemlock High School located at 733 N. Hemlock Rd.
Board President Wesener said, “Hemlock Public School District wouldn’t be where we are today without the dedication, support, and leadership of tremendous individuals like Reg Rye. We are proud to have the opportunity to recognize and honor his efforts with the Reg Rye Learning Center.”
The Reg Rye Learning Center features a modern take on an educational space with mixed-level seating, a technology-rich environment and includes an outdoor patio space.
Superintendent Dr. Killingbeck said, “Reg Rye’s consistent, calming, and passionate leadership helped guide the district through challenging times. Reg helped establish the longest-standing business partnership in the state and perhaps nation that has a history of nearly 50 years. We are delighted to honor him and his work at Hemlock Public School District.”
The Reg Rye Learning Center is home to Hemlock Virtual which is a tuition-free secondary school with hybrid learning options. Course offerings, partnership classes, and personalized learning plans make Hemlock Public Schools a top choice for online learning in the area. Please consider joining us on Wednesday, June 2nd at 5:30 PM.
Hemlock Virtual-Reg Rye Learning Center
Hemlock Public School District has a tradition of valuing the success of students. The district continues to find for some, traditional school environments are not necessarily the best fit to meet their educational needs.
Hemlock Virtual is a tuition-free secondary school with hybrid learning options. Course offerings, partnership classes, and personalized learning plans make Hemlock Public Schools a top choice for online learning in the area.
Superintendent Dr. Killingbeck noted, “This is one example of how Hemlock Public School District supports student success, going above and beyond to create opportunities and space for students to succeed.”
Students can email, call, or stop in anytime during school hours to receive assistance on their schoolwork. Instructors are available for support, and weekly check-ins take place to monitor the student’s progress.
Shawn Enright, a Hemlock Virtual educator, says “We allow for students to work on their high school credits at their own pace and at a time that is convenient for them. In my role, I like to think that I am assisting students with creating endless opportunities for a bright future.”
On June 2nd, at 5:30 pm, the district will hold the grand opening of the Reg Rye Learning Center located within the south side of Hemlock High School. The area, along with a landscaped outdoor patio, allows for comfortable seating and space for the students to work and socialize.
