Surface and Subsurface examples
Surface Agricultural Drainage – Natural Drainage Systems
An example of a surface mining example is agricultural drainage. These are types of ditches which are placed to carry the water from areas of land which have got too much of it or are going to becoming water logged to areas in need of water or natural rivers that run off areas. Farmland needs water but too much water can really mess up farm land.
Subsurface Agricultural Drainage / Underground Drainage
Underground drainage systems are used to remove any water form the soil and do have alot of advantages over or above the ground, surface drainage systems. For one thing they don't get in the way of operations around the farm and there is no wasted land taken over for ditches on the other hand they are a more costly option.
Strip-mining
is classified as area mining or contour mining on the basis of the deposit geometry and type. The cycle of operations for both techniques consists of vegetation clearing, soil removal, drilling and blasting of overburden stripping, removal of the coal or other mineral commodity, and reclamation.
Types of Mining
Open pit mining
is where you can find the worlds deepest types of mines that are in the world. Its a technique where you extract rock or minerals from the earth to form a open pit.
Mountain top removal
is a form of mining that is where you mine on a mountains summit. Its a good way to mine for coal.
Slope mining
is a method of accessing valuable geological material, such as coal or ore. It makes a tunnel that is horizontal and it goes very deep down in the ground.
Drift mining
is a more general mining term, meaning a horizontal kind of mine thats like slope mining.
Shaft mining
is the most known type of mine that you see alot. They go straight down into the ground to find certain rocks that are deep inside the earth.
Fracking
Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well. Fracking can cause drinking water being dangerous to drink. There has been a lot of money spent on trying to keep fresh water at places where fracking is being used.
