They are so wonderful and brighten our days. Our partnership with you is also invaluable. Ladd is a very special place and it takes all of us working together to make it great. I am honored to be a part of our school.

A generous donation for Ladd Acres Astros!

The late Dr. Alper A. Garren was a brilliant, compassionate, and widely-loved Northern California particle physicist who gave generously of his time and resources to provide educational opportunities to promising young people. Before his death, he set up the Al Garren Fund, which is administered by the San Francisco Foundation, for making charitable contributions of various sorts. Brian Kyaw’s (our LSS assistant and tennis coach at Hilhi) father Myo Myint Kyaw, a friend of Mr. Garren and one of his trustees, has arranged for your school to be a recipient of a grant from the Al Garren Fund.

Thanks to the Al Garren Fund, Ladd Acres was awarded $45,000 last week. We are very excited and grateful for this generous contribution. With the funds we intend on hiring two teachers to instruct year-long lessons in garden-STEM and art focused lessons through the lens of STEAM. Both will start in the Fall of 2018.

Student Environment Forms for 2018-2019

As we begin to plan for the new school year, it is now time to complete your student environment forms. Teachers work tirelessly to create balanced classes and we need your input too. Forms will be in the office on Monday, May 7th so stop by and fill one out for your student. The window to turn it in is May 8th - May 16th. No forms will be accepted after May 16th. Thanks for getting them in early.

SAFETY IS A PRIORITY

Parking Lot Procedures - Arrival and Dismissal

Big changes are ahead for Ladd Acres. In the 2018-2019 school year, we will have a new parking lot and drop off area. Our bus and drop areas will flip. Students being dropped off will be dropped off in the front of the school. Buses will use the turn-around area. The construction of our new lots will take place this summer. Information will be sent home during the summer so that everyone is prepared. The front parking lot will now be designated for our families as staff will be using a new side and back parking lot. It is our hope and belief that this will alleviate issues on Cornelius Pass Road and safety within our parking lot.

In the meantime, as a reminder, please do not back up traffic on Corn Pass at arrival and dismissal time. We continually get phone calls from community members concerned about the traffic flow. Parking and walking up helps when space is available but in most cases it is not. In that case, we suggest circling around to alleviate the traffic on the main road. This will all be remedied once the new parking lot and dismissal loop is built this summer.

Coming to our Garden Area

Thank you Bimbo Bakery!

Thanks to the generous monetary donation from Bimbo Bakery, we were able to purchase an outdoor learning area for our garden-stem classes. The space will be located on the area near the stumps. In this outdoor enclosed space, students will partake in outdoor classes that tie directly to STEM activities and our community garden. We are very grateful for the generous company! We are looking for help with assembling it. Many hands make light work. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Sinapi at mailto:sinapif@hsd.k12.or.us or call the office directly (503) 844-1300.

Ideas from the Astro Academy

When a child sits in class, they are bombarded by sights, sounds, smells, and distractions everywhere. An abundance of sensory information can make it difficult for some kids to sit in class and learn. Sensory processing is the way that our bodies manage information from all their senses.

How can you help your child boost their attention span and ability to focus?

Incorporate various forms of movement and physical activity into their daily routine. Here are some fun ideas:

  • Jump, spin, scoot, dance, bounce, outdoor play, obstacle course activities (Vestibular activities)

  • Use weighted bands, chewy foods, move heavy objects appropriate for the child’s age (Proprioceptive activities)

  • Animal walk, bridge exercises, yoga, sit on a bouncy ball (Core activities)
