Did You Know?

The Georgetown University think tank Future Ed, has published a report called Attendance Playbook: Smart Solutions for Reducing Chronic Absenteeism . There are almost eight million public-school students chronically absent each year in the United States, and this report examines absenteeism in-depth to provide operators, policymakers and educators practical strategies for improving attendance. Through this research, Future Ed recommended several approaches but specifically Breakfast for All. This section cites surveys from Baltimore and Philadelphia public schools that implemented universal free breakfast programs. After a year, participating schools reported improved academic results and lower rates of absenteeism and tardiness among students. Studies continue to reflect the overwhelmingly positive effect that eating breakfast has on students and educational outcomes. This report further states that students who do not eat breakfast are more likely to make errors, have poorer memory recall and are far more likely to be absent or late to school.

CNP Employee Spotlight - Mr. Eddie Osborne

Eddie Osborne has been with Huntsville City Schools Child Nutrition Program for over 18 years. He is originally from Mobile, Alabama. Eddie has been married for 17 years. He has no children and has also lived in Nashville, Tennesee. Cooking food is the thing that Eddie enjoys the most about his job in CNP. When he is not working, Eddie loves to fish. His favorite music to listen to is Hip hop and he also feels that the words to live by are to “always be kind to people”. He enjoys child nutrition because of all the children he gets to serve. If he were not working in CNP, then Eddie says that he would be working in a restaurant. Eddie says that if he could be any fictional character that it would be the Roadrunner from the Looney Tunes film series. Eddie’s favorite sport is football where he roots for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The one thing he does not like to do is washing dishes. If he could meet anyone alive or dead it would-be film star, Eddie Murphy. The three traits that define Eddie are that he is funny, kind, and always happy. In five years Eddie plans to be retired and laying on the beach. He defines success as always doing your best.
