The Good News

October 2, 2016 - St. John XXIII School

Leadership Team Message

We survived September! The first month of school was a HUGE success! Congratulations to our parents, students, and staff for tucking the first month away - 9 more to go! We have had so much learning and growing this month that it is really hard to imagine. I bet you are learning a lot from the little ones - I know we sure are!

We said good-bye to Mrs. Hammond on Friday who was working in Ms. Kelava's grade 3 room, but we will welcome Mrs. White who joins us on Monday! Also, we were fortunate to have Mrs. Laybourne join our staff last week, too!

What a glorious week! We had so many beautiful moments at St. John XXIII and we truly are a blessed community. Please take some time to read, and look, at the news below! We continue to thank you for your support!

Thanksgiving Mass & Bible Presentation

The word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek word for thanksgiving. On October 6th at 9:30 am our school community will gather at Our Lady of the Angels Church to celebrate the Eucharist at our annual Thanksgiving Mass. As part of our celebration our Grade 4 students will be receiving their own Bibles to guide them on their faith journey. These Bibles are a gift from the OLA Church CWL, OLA School, and St. John XXIII School.

Students will be travelling by bus to Mass. Please ensure, prior to this special school-wide event, that you have completed the field trip consent form on PowerSchool. We welcome parents, grandparents and siblings to join us, but as space on the buses is limited, please meet us at the church. We are looking forward to thanking God as a school for our abundant blessings!

Safe Arrival Program & EICS App

Over the past few months several schools in our district have been piloting a tool that allows parents to report absences online or through an interactive callout. We are now ready to begin using that program here at St. John XXIII.

This new application to report absences is through SchoolsConnects using the Safe Arrival Portal. Your child’s safety is of paramount importance to us, and this new application allows us to track missing students much faster in the morning.

On Monday, October 3rd, if you have provided us an email address, you should be receiving an email from Elk Island Catholic Schools inviting you to create an account for the Safe Arrival portal. Please take the time to review the email as it has specific login information pertaining to your child.

Using Safe Arrival you will be able to report your child’s absence the following ways:

  • Using the Safe Arrival link inside the new EICS App
  • Creating an account with Safe Arrival using the credentials supplied in the email you will receive
  • Downloading the Safe Arrival App using Google Play or the App Store and create an account using the credentials supplied in the email you will receive.
  • Calling 1-877-246-9970

Additional features with this software include:

  • Email confirmation when an absence is recorded inside Safe Arrival
  • Interactive callouts, allowing us to easily contact multiple people at once regarding unverified absences

As this is new for us as well, we ask for your patience as we work out how best to use the application. When you receive the email it will walk you through setting up your account. If you encounter any issues with this process please contact the school or for assistance.

Please feel free to email us with your feedback and thank you for your continued support.

First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Presentation

On Friday we had the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit presentation from the St. Albert Museum visit the school. Students participated in various centres and learned much about the Indigenous cultures. Thank you to Lana Santana and the Fort Saskatchewan Multicultural Society for assisting St. John XXIII in this educational endeavour!

Grade 4 Servant Leadership Retreat - S.L.S

It was a glorious September afternoon down at West River's Edge Park with our grade four Servant Leadership Squad (S.L.S). We had some special guests join us - thank you to Father Moses from OLA Catholic Church and our friend, Mr. Paul Corrigan, EICS' Division Faith and Wellness Principal who took time out of their schedules to join us. Also a big thanks to our awesome moms for preparing lunch for our leaders. Thank you to our dedicated teachers: Mr. Walker, Mrs. Comartin, Ms. Kelava, and Mrs. Morin who have spent hours preparing for this year's S.L.S. Also, a HUGE "Hi-Five" to our S.L.S students who are ready to LEAD ON!

Terry Fox Foundation

What a great day - our students did an amazing job of continuing Terry's legacy! AND, as a school community, we have raised $2420.85 so far this year for the Terry Fox Foundation. Well done!

Read In Week - One World, Many Voices

We share one world and fill it with our many voices. And through reading, we learn from other people’s lives and stories and become inspired to raise our own voice to share our own story. It is tradition at St. John XXIII to celebrate Read In Week. We have events planned throughout the week (including a classroom reading challenge and our Principal, Mrs. Melnyk, who has a LOVE for books, will have a special reading each day!) and we invite you to make reading a special part of your family time this week as well. Read On!
