Weekly Report for January 5, 2024
Tiger Nation:
We were excited to welcome students and staff back to campus this week for the start of the second semester!
Former GHS AVID students Mario Hernandez (class of 2013) and Diego Hernandez (class of 2012) created a scholarship fund through their business Royal Landscaping. Yesterday, the brothers visited campus and awarded 2 seniors; Gibson Gallares and Sofia De La Torre with a $500 scholarship. Tigers helping Tigers!
Getting off to a strong start at the beginning of the second semester is critical to your child’s academic success. Please encourage them to do their very best to make this happen.
Why School Attendance Matters
Research shows daily school attendance positively impacts students’ social, emotional, and cognitive development. School participation maximizes life opportunities for all students. It gives them the foundation they need to succeed in school and life.
When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve—even among students struggling in school. Students who attend school regularly are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future.
Physically being present in school is one of the most basic conditions for a student’s success. If a student is not in school, they are not learning what is being taught and could fall behind in earning the necessary credits needed to graduate.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support of Gilbert High School!

GHS is a CLOSED CAMPUS
Gilbert High School is a closed campus. This means that students are not permitted to leave campus during their school day. Once students arrive on campus, they are required to stay through their last scheduled class period. Students will not be allowed to leave unless a parent physically comes in to sign their student out. Please plan appointments accordingly.
Students that drive may not access their vehicle during their school day.
GHS does not accept food deliveries from Door Dash, Uber, etc...
We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe.

AFJROTC
On December 16th, our GHS Air Force JROTC traveled to Red Mountain High School for their 1st annual Raider/Drill Meet. The Raider portion was a tough and grueling 12 station exercise event. Events included HumVee pack and push, tire flip / telephone pole carry, push-up/sit-up challenge and tractor tire pull with a cadet sitting in the tire, to name a few. After the Raider event, our cadets participated in the drill portion of the competition. Our GHS Air Force JROTC placed second in Unarmed Regulation Drill and JV Color Guard. There were a total of 19 JROTC units who participated in the Red Mountain Raider/Drill Competition.
JROTC held their own Angel Tree Program with all donations going to the Sunshine Acres Children's Home in Mesa. Cadet Tullie, Cadet Allen and Cadet Palafox delivered the donations after school! Thank you for your generosity!

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Selection
To give all students an equal opportunity to become their school's valedictorian or salutatorian, Gilbert Public Schools will use the following guidelines:
- Class rank will be used to determine the Valedictorian/Salutatorian distinction. In addition, recognition will be made for students who are in the top 1% of their class. Weighted classes will be included when determining class rank and will be identified on a student's transcript.
- Foreign exchange students will not be eligible for the valedictorian or salutatorian position.
- Mid-year graduates will not be eligible for the valedictorian or salutatorian position.
- The valedictorian and salutatorian must have taken a minimum of twelve and one-half (12.5) credits (25 semester courses) at the high school from which they are graduating and must be enrolled in a minimum of five (5) class periods (full time status) per semester.
Students who are interested in competing for the valedictorian or salutatorian position are encouraged to discuss this process with their school counselor.
Graduation Tracker
Parents and students can use the Graduation Tracker tool in the Infinite Campus portal to see if your student is on track for graduation. This tool will show the credits a student has earned and the credits the student has planned for future years.
Freshmen students will not have any credits shown in the Graduation Tracker until the end of the first semester. Once freshmen have completed their 4-year plan with their counselor during Freshman visits in September, the credits and classes planned for future years will show up in the tracker.
Please Login to your Infinite Campus Portal to access the Graduation Tracker:
