Dear Parents/Guardians:
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Sister Alphonse Academy Families!
As we enter into this Thanksgiving long weekend, we thank God for all of the blessings He gives each and every one of us. Although there are many challenges at this time, we know He is always there for us.
This week we have our virtual school council meeting on Wednesday, October 13th at 6:30 p.m. If you wish to join our meeting, please see our website for the Google meeting link at: www.saa.gsacrd.ab.ca. We are looking forward to seeing you there.
We are also excited to share that our literacy project is well underway in our Grade two and Grade three classes. GSACRD is working with Dr. Georgiou with a reading intervention project which is focussed on building literacy skills in students. Please see our write up below for more information. A big thank you to Mrs. Raypold, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. MacDonald, and Mrs. Phillips for preparing and setting up all of the students for success!
We hope that you have a peaceful and happy long weekend and we are looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
Take care, God bless and have a great weekend!

GSACRD Back to School Plan 2021/2022 - UPDATE OCTOBER 8, 2021
Positive Covid-10 Cases within our schools
Positive COVID-19 Cases within our schools
GSACRD school administrators will be informing their families when a positive COVID- 19 case is reported. This will add a layer of awareness to the cases in our communities, allowing families to make decisions regarding their child’s health and safety. Please be mindful of the following:
• Disclosure of COVID-19 status is voluntary, although strongly encouraged. Families are not obligated to share and therefore, no communication does not necessarily mean that there is no presence of COVID-19 in the school or in your child’s class.
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools / September 16, 2021
RETURN TO SCHOOL PLAN 2021-2022
• Names of positive cases will not be shared and close contacts are not required to isolate. Communication will serve only as information only.
When a positive case is disclosed, school administrators will communicate with families of students who were in classes with the positive case. The whole school will also receive a more general communication. Families who only receive the general communication, would not have had a child in the class of a positive case. Please note that this does not mean that your child could not have had contact with the affected individual during unstructured times.
Parents of children who test positive have a legal obligation to keep their child in isolation in accordance with the COVID-19 protocols set out by AHS. Please check https://www.alberta.ca/isolation.aspx and adhere to the required isolation measures.
(Information above is taken from our GSACRD Return to School plan - September 16, 2021)

Literacy Interventions at SAA!
Grade 2 and 3 Literacy!
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools has partnered with University of Alberta’s lead researcher and professor, Dr. George Georgiou, to participate in the Alberta Research Network (ARN) Literacy Study. The study aims to examine the learning loss in grade 2 and 3 students resulting from the pandemic and provides educators with professional learning opportunities on research-based practices to eliminate reading difficulties.
Grade 2 and 3 students across the division will be assessed in the areas of sight word recognition, fluency, phonics, phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. Students at risk for reading difficulties will receive intervention programming designed by Dr. Georgiou and delivered by trained interventionists, including teachers and educational assistants.
We’re pleased to work in partnership with the University of Alberta while providing a structured and systematic approach to reading instruction. Dr. Georgiou has preliminary evidence to suggest that the interventions will be effective and help approximately 300 children overcome reading difficulties. We are looking forward to these literacy interventions starting during this upcoming week!
Volunteering at SAA!
Please note that once your forms have been approved and accepted in the office, the volunteer time and entry will be arranged through appointment, as aligned with our current entry practices. Thank you in advance for your time and support!
