The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of October 21-25!
Message from the principal
As we recognize October as national College Application Month, we continue to highlight a few of our UHS graduates who are out doing different kinds of work/learning and share about the pathways that took them where they are around Iowa and around the world.
This week our featured UHS alum is Roger Ipson. Roger is finishing his final semester this fall at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) as a liberal arts major. During his time at DMACC, Roger has earned a perfect 4.0 grade point while also being a member of the DMACC Honors Program. Roger is the President of the Student Activities Council (SAC) which serves as the primary student body organization for the Ankeny campus (DMACC's largest and primary campus). He plans to attend Drake University or Grand View University starting this spring. He plans to be an English major. Roger has traveled a tremendous path to where he is today and is leading and learning with distinction.
Below is a note from UHS counselors sent to UHS seniors regarding upcoming opportunities for focused college application work with college and university admissions staff. I wanted all of our UHS students and families to be seeing and thinking about these types of opportunities as they plan for the future.
"Hey Seniors! Thank you for an awesome College/Career App month! We continue to offer resources and wanted to remind you of the following opportunities. Please come to the Counseling Office to get a pass before each workshop as you will need to have permission from your classroom teacher to attend.

UHS Construction UPDATE
GAPP students visit UHS
UHS is currently hosting 18 students and 2 teachers from our partner school in Lindenberg, Germany as the first part of our GAPP (German-American Partnership Program) exchange. The students are living with UHS families for two and a half weeks to experience high school and typical American life. The students have also visited Iowa State University and attended a class, had a campus tour, and toured Hilton Coliseum.
They also had the opportunity to learn about life in early Iowa at Living History Farms. This week, they'll get to tour the Capitol building and visit the Jordan House to learn about its role in the Underground Railroad. Fourteen students and two teachers from UHS will travel to Lindenberg next summer to complete the 2019-20 exchange, which has been running since 1994!

A note from Silver Cord Committe to UHS students
Welcome back to school! From the stack of hours turned in during schedule pickup and Open House, we can tell many of you did a TON of volunteer work this summer, and you invited your friends. The senior class has volunteered almost 11,000 hours during high school, and the freshmen are off to a great start with 654 hours this summer. Way to go!
Hours were updated last week -- check them here: Silver Cord Ladder If you have 40 or more hours, go see Mrs. Strong in Room 212 to pick up a free Silver Cord Volunteer t-shirt!
Do you love working with younger kids? We have lots of fun opportunities coming up, including Urbandale Team J-Hawk Football and Girls On The Run, where you can work with and inspire elementary age students. You can always find opportunities and current information at our Silver Cord information page. We try to put the current events at the top, with ongoing volunteer opportunities towards the bottom. This year, try setting up a weekly volunteering job, and see how fast your hours add up! Just read about each opportunity, choose something and sign up, and show up with an Hours Verification Form (attached). When you're done volunteering, have the adult in charge sign your form and turn your form in at the UHS Main Office. It's easy!
Remember, this is the only Silver Cord email address that is checked on a regular basis. Please send hours and questions to us!
Please turn in your summer volunteer hours to the UHS Main Office as soon as possible so we can get them added, and keep on doing good!
