What's Happening in 5th grade?
Academics
Reader's Workshop
We will be starting new book clubs at this week. Each time your child has a book club meeting, they need to have their assigned reading completed, and at least 8 sticky notes to mark their thinking for conversations starters. Then two days after the meeting they need to have a write long completed. Here is a link to the expectations and the group calendar can be found in your child's homework folder.
The students are also learning about different propaganda techniques in order to understand bias in the author's message.
Writer's Workshop
5th graders are starting to work on their research topic which they will then create a non-fiction digital book on that topic. All of the students should have their resources and start to take notes next week. They will get class time to work on this, but will also need to work on this at home as well. Here is the letter which explains this project and includes a calendar and rubric.
Math
We are working on our measurement unit and then will move into a unit on growth patterns. We will be working on creating and using tables and graphs to represent growth patterns and creating algebraic equations to represent the growth pattern. When we finish, we will be working on describing, summarizing, comparing and representing data.
Social Studies
We will be finishing the week learning about the Bill of Rights!
Science (starts approx. May 14)
The students will be starting their unit on roller coaster physics. Throughout this unit, the students will be learning about forces and Newton's laws of motion. The homework for this unit will be online through Discovery Education. This online homework, videos and reading, will allow us to do a lot of hands-on activities in class, and in the end create a marble roller coaster!
