Helping You Stay Connected To Your Howell Family
Girls Swim & Girls Tennis Announces New Head Coaches
As Howell continues to grow its programs and increase expectations, the type of leaders in the programs are essential to our growth. Success in the classroom, in activity/sport and in our community are the priorities for the person that leads our girls swim program. When a coach is hired at Howell we are looking for great role models and leaders that will develop the student-participant not only in their activity/sport, but also as a person. We want all of our student-athletes walking away from their 4 year experience at Howell with a set of leadership skills, qualities, and experiences that are going to make them more successful in life after high school. Simply put, we want our student-athletes to develop into better students, athletes, and people because they were involved in our programs.
On Friday morning, Howell announced two new members to the Howell Family that will lead the Girls Swim and Girls Tennis programs. Mandy Windham was named the next Head Girls Swim Coach and Tracy Carlson was named the next Head Girls Tennis Coach.
Coach Windham brings a strong passion for swim and over 27 years of swim coaching experience to the girls swim program. She has led programs in Alabama, Texas and Missouri. She brings an extensive club and high school swim coaching background to the girls swim program that is unmatched in our area. Coach Windham has also taken the steps necessary to become an ASCA certified swim coach. Additionally, Coach Windham has spent time training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The past two seasons she has been the head boys swim coach at Howell and has helped to continue to develop and grow the boys program. Prior to coaching swim Coach Windham played tennis at the college level and was a two time All-American.
Coach Carlson brings a strong passion for tennis along with six years of head coaching experience to the program. Coach Carlson has been the Head Boys Tennis Coach for the past six seasons at Howell. During this time she has become a USTA certified coach and is also a Safeplay Net Generation Provider. Under Coach Carlson’s leadership the boys program has continued to grow and has reached a new level of success unseen in the program's history. Prior to teaching and coaching at Howell, Coach Carlson was a member of the Maryville University Tennis Team. Coach Carlson also has the distinct honor of being an Army veteran.
Howell Signing Day To Take Place Virtually For 2020
One of the most anticipated senior events for Vikings that are continuing their education and activity or sport at the college level is the annual “Howell Signing Day.” This event recognizes Howell student-participants and their families that will be furthering their MSHSAA sponsored sport or activity (band, cheer, choir, dance, drama) at the college level. This great Howell tradition that started six years ago will have a different look for the Class of 2020 with school being closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. As we try to offer the most viable option in supporting and recognizing our college bound student-participants we hope you will take part in this years event and celebrate the seniors that have done so much to represent Howell in such a positive way.
Below is an outline of what the virtual 2020 Howell Signing Day will look like this year. There are several pieces that need to be completed that do have deadlines to meet. We hope that all seniors and their families find these events and activities to be a great alternative to our normal Howell Signing Day festivities.
1.) For those that will be furthering their education and MSHSAA activity or sport at the college level please email Activities Director, Sean Erwin at sean.erwin@fhsdschools.org to ensure that he has your name, activity or sport participating in at the college level and the college you will be attending and participating at. This information will be used to send out official invitations to our Signing Day Seniors and their families.
2.) Due to social distancing, we will not be able to host the event and have participants and families attend in person so for the 2020 Howell Signing Day we will utilize an online format. We will live stream our virtual 2020 Howell Signing Day on the morning of May 13th at 9:00 a.m. on our FHVikings Youtube Channel. A special website link will be shared with participants and families next week where they can view the Signing Day Ceremony with family and friends.
3.) On the virtual 2020 Howell Signing Day, each student will be introduced with their name, activity/sport participating in at the college level and the college they will be attending. While that information is being announced, there will be a slide showing that shares 1 or 2 pictures of the student. We are requesting that students upload a picture of themselves playing their sport at Howell or a picture of them with their family in Howell apparel. The student and their family can choose their picture they want to use. The picture shared should represent Howell. Additionally, students can upload a second picture if they want to include a picture of themselves and family in apparel that represents the college they will be attending. All pictures must be uploaded to http://tinyurl.com/howell2020. Each picture must be saved/titled with the first and last name of the student. The deadline to upload pictures is May 10th.
4.) Each student will be receiving the official Howell Signing Day shirt. Each student must go to - https://tinyurl.com/HowellSigningDay2020 by May 7th to select their t-shirt size. Coaches will then drop off the t-shirts in a gift bag at the doors of our Signing Day students on May 8th and May 9th.
5.) When there is the opportunity, the Howell Activities Department will offer the official Howell Signing Day picture to be taken by our professional photographer. This opportunity will take place on one day at a specified time frame for students and their families to stop by Howell to have their picture taken. Students and families attending this picture opportunity will receive their personalized signing day picture several days following the event via email.
6.) Coaches will begin reaching out to students in their activities and sports to remind them of the above pieces beginning Monday, April 13th. If students or families have questions they can email Activities Director, Sean Erwin at sean.erwin@fhsdschools.org

The Francis Howell School District Board of Education has voted unanimously to place Proposition S on the June 2, 2020, ballot. Proposition S is a $244 million bond issue that will not increase the current tax rate. Voter approval of Proposition S would allow the District to borrow money now and in the future to address pressing facility needs at all Francis Howell schools.
