Crow Island Parent Newsletter

August 22, 2022

Dear Crow Island Families,

We are thrilled to welcome you back to our 22-23 school year. We can not wait to see students and their smiling faces on Wednesday morning for the first day of school!

On Tuesday morning, we will host a Meet & Greet for all students. The Meet & Greet will run from 10:45 - 11:30am and is a time for parents to bring your children to preview their classroom, see their space, and meet their teacher. You can find more information about Tuesday below.

As we start school, we also want to remind parents that the building can get pretty warm. We encourage all families to send students with a water bottle to school as we will refill water bottles throughout the day. In addition, we are proactive when it is warm and classes plan for cold air breaks during the day in the cooler parts of the school.

Lastly, I want to remind all families to take a look at our arrival and dismissal procedures. It is really important that all families have a plan with their children and follow the procedures outlined in the plan. It will take us a few days to get it right so please have patience and do your part by being familiar with the expectations in the process linked in the newsletter below.

We look forward to a great first few days at Crow Island.

Stay well,

Luke Livingston

Tuesday Meet & Greet:

Families are invited to bring your child into school to preview the classroom and quickly meet the teacher before school starts. Meet & Greets will occur on Tuesday, August 23 from 10:45 - 11:30am.

  • Parking: Parking can be tricky at Crow Island. We encourage families who live close to walk to school. If you are parking, we suggest the following:

    • Circle drive off the front of the school. Please don’t double park as emergency vehicles need to access the campus.

    • South side of Willow Road in the front of the campus

    • Glendale Avenue in the designated parking spots. Please be a good neighbor and avoid parking in front of driveways of the homes on Glendale Avenue.

  • Entering: All visitors will enter school through the main entrance.

  • School supplies ordered in the spring will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom. If you did not order you can purchase supplies independently and bring them during the Meet and Greet on August 24th. You can find the supply list here: School Supplies.

First Days of School:

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 24th. Dismissal will occur at 11:20am. We will start our regular full-day school schedule on Thursday, August 25th.

Arrival & Dismissal:

Please take a few minutes to review the Arrival & Dismissal process for 22-23. We have a structured system and it is helpful if families review this before the first day of school. During the first days of school, staff will greet students outside with signs that say the teachers last name. Students will find the signs and enter the school with their classroom.

  • Kindergarten ~ Front steps near main entrance.

  • 1st Grade ~ Blacktop near the Crow Island Statue

  • 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, & 4th Grade ~ Back playground near the blacktop/TACO.

Safety & Security Efforts:

Crow Island is committed to ensuring a safe school experience for all students and families. Each year we review our procedures and make adjustments. Below are twp quick updates and reminders:

  • Entering School (Visitors)~ Returning families will notice a procedure change to our front entrance to ensure a safe point of entry for all students and staff. Visitors will ring the bell to be buzzed into the vestibule. Visitors who are dropping off water bottles, lunches, or other forgotten items will leave them on the table in the vestibule. Visitors who need to speak to staff, will buzz a second time to enter the foyer.

  • Bring ID ~ All visitors will need to bring their ID when coming into the building to visit the classroom or office. The ID is run through an online system and visitors are given a red visitor badge to move throughout the building.

  • Practice Safety Drills ~ As a reminder, we do practice drills (ex: fire, tornado, and lockdown). As always, we will practice as a staff, practice with students, and communicate with parents so you can follow-up at home once drills are completed.

Health Form - To School Nurse:

All medical forms required by the state of Illinois are due before the first day of school. Please see below to ensure you have the necessary forms for your child(ren):

  • Kindergarten & all NEW students: Health Examination, Eye Examination, & Dental Examination

  • Second Grade: Dental Examination

You can find additional copies of the forms on the District website by clicking here. Please send copies of the forms to your school nurse via mail or email before the first day (access contact information here). You can also upload the information to the SNAP Health Portal.

Lunch/Recess Update:

We are returning to our practice of eating lunch inside in designated lunch room spaces. Below is the schedule and locations for lunch/recess:

  • The entire lunch/recess period runs from 11:30 - 12:20pm

  • 11:30 - 11:55am

    • Kindergarten (Farnham) ~ Lunch in classroom

    • 2nd Grade ~ Lunch in Foyer

    • 3rd Grade ~ Lunch in downstairs lunchroom

  • 11:55 - 12:20pm

    • Kindergarten (Brody & Petrillo) ~ Lunch in classroom

    • 1st Grade ~ Lunch in downstairs lunchroom

    • 4th Grade ~ Lunch in Foyer

  • When students are not eating, they are outside at recess.

  • When in doubt…we go outside. The one exception at the start of the year will be in extreme rain. If raining, we will call indoor recess and we use spaces throughout the school to program for indoor recess.
