The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc.
Two superpowers after WWII and their opposing ideologies
After the Greek Civil War and 1956 Suez Crisis forced the retrenchment of Great Britain , the United States and the Union as the sole superpower.
The superpowers would engage in ''proxy wars" throughout the globe,attempting to extend their own influence and limit the expansion of the other superpower.
Two alliance during Cold War
Cold War alliances like NATO and the Warsaw pact both reflected and intensified the divisions between democratic and socialist nation.
In the years following World War II, European nations took steps to align with others to protect themselves from future aggression.
Iron Curtain
The term Iron Curtain had been in occasional and varied use as a metaphor since the 19th century, but it came to prominence only after it was used by the former British prime minister Winston Churchill in a speech at Fulton, Missouri, U.S., on March 5, 1946, when he said of the communist states, “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.”
containment policy - Marshall plan and Truman Doctrine
Truman Doctrine was President Truman giving financial aid to Europe after world war 2 because of the Nazis destroying almost everything in their path. The Marshall plan was also giving financial to turkey and Greece
Berlin Crisis
The Berlin crisis was a conflict mainly between the USSR and USA on which country should take what part of Germany. west was USA and east was the USSR but berlin was in the east so they split that up as well. people didn't like the USSR so the USSR put up a wall so people couldn't cross trapping some of the people on USA side so they sent airplanes to supply them
Korean war
the Korean war was a war between north Korea and south Korea north for communism and south democracy. The north getting help from USSR and China. The south was getting help from the USA, and the UN. today the north ans south are split from the 38 parallel.
Second red scare
The second red scare was a scare that the american people feared about communism so government issued a program to look for spies and the Hollywood ten was ten actress who refused to be questioned and the government thought they were spies

But for millions of Americans in the 1950s, the American Dream became a reality. For many, the notion of prosperity remained just a dream. In for many years they had an American Dream.
