Welcome to Kindergarten!

7-22-2019

Dear Friends,

My name is Kathy Hunt and I am the new principal at William Gay Early Childhood Center(WGECC). I have been an educator for 38 years and I have spent the last 8 years as the principal of Edmond Doyle. I was very sad to leave my Edmond Doyle family, but I am excited to join the teachers and staff at WGECC. I have enjoyed getting to know the people that serve WGECC and I have discovered that they love and care for their students and families as if they were their own.

We are all so excited to have your family join us at William Gay. Kindergarten is so important for your child's educational journey. This is where it really all starts! We need to remind everyone that kindergarten is definitely NOT a grade a child wants to miss. Not only will we have lots of fun, we will be learning everything they need to know to prepare them for future learning. Unfortunately, in the past couple of years, William Gay's attendance has been poor causing our special school to get an F on our state report card. Poor attendance is the ONLY reason for this grade. Let's all work together to change this by making sure our students are at school daily and on time. The teachers and staff at William Gay are wonderful. Children that attend consistently will leave here prepared for first grade.

What does a prepared first grader look like? They are socially and emotionally ready to be a good friend, a good student, and a good leader. They will have a good foundation for reading and math. We promise to do our part to get your child prepared this year and we need you to promise to help us by making sure your child is well rested, on time, and at school everyday the doors open. We also need you to read with your child daily!

Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. This is my first time in kindergarten. In 1964-65 when I started school there was no public kindergarten. This building was built in 1957 and is my age! We will all be starting this journey together. I'm excited and look forward to meeting all of you and your precious children! We are going to have a great year!

SIncerely,

Kathy Hunt
