Eagles' News Brief:

7.16.2020- Summer Update!

Good Afternoon Eagle Families,

I hope this message finds you all safe and well!

Here is the latest update from WCPSS in case you missed it. Please be sure your contact information is up to date. You may update your School Messenger preferences at https://www.wcpss.net/schoolmessenger.

Governor Cooper’s Message:

I want to give you all an update on the Governor’s announcement as well as some school related updates. Yesterday, Governor Cooper announced that schools would reopen under plan B. For Wake County Schools, this is the plan for 1 week of in person learning and 2 weeks of remote learning. He also announced that all K-12 students will wear a face mask and that the state is providing 5 face masks per student. Governor Cooper said that the state would be watching Covid data carefully to monitor if we need to go to fully remote learning or back to direct instruction for all students each day.

What Will Plan B Look Like at Vandora Springs?

Under Plan B, our teachers will work together to provide strong instruction to all students whether they are learning at home or at school. Some teachers will focus on providing in-person instruction while others will focus on providing virtual instruction. Learning targets and lessons will be common across all learning environments. At the end of their direct learning weeks at school, students will be given materials to support their work during their remote instruction weeks, as needed. These materials could be items like books, manipulatives, instructional games or worksheets. Students will also need access to their device during the remote learning weeks.

The schedule for the remote learning days and direct learning days will be similar. Remote learning teachers will teach live lessons and monitor student learning. A live lesson in remote learning is when the teacher teaches a lesson in real time using Google Meet. The teacher will typically model first, and then have the students do some guided practice before releasing them to practice the skill independently. Struggling students may receive some small group support during the independent part of the lesson if needed.

Support During Remote Learning:

During the weeks of remote learning, children can learn from home, stay with someone you designate, or attend community based childcare. The community is working now to create these locations. They are also working together to keep costs low. Schools will provide curbside meal pick up during the day for students that are in remote learning or the Virtual Academy.

Virtual Academy:

Over 100 of our students have already signed up for the Virtual Academy online school. We have plenty of space for additional students especially at the kindergarten level. If you sign up for the virtual academy, students will have online school every day for at least a semester, but it is recommended for a whole school year. Students will receive at least 2.5 hours a day of live instruction with another few hours of work activities. Students will experience a typical schedule for a school day 5 days a week. The Virtual Academy is a part of Vandora and will more than likely be taught by our teachers. Students in the Virtual Academy are part of our school and will be included in our school events and activities.

We are getting questions from some homeschool parents who want their children to participate in the Virtual Academy. This is exciting! If you know someone asking about this, please let them know they are welcome to join. They just need to contact student assignment or register at their base school first.

Single Subject Acceleration

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were forced to close March 13, 2020. The closure of schools prevented students from participating in the testing necessary to qualify for Single Subject Acceleration (SSA). Students are typically tested in the Spring of the previous school year for an accelerated placement for the upcoming school year. As a result of COVID-19, the Advanced Learning Service team has created testing plans to respond to the three instructional environments that may take place during the 2020-2021 school year. Learn more. Parents who are interesting in nominating a student for testing should email Cammie Viverette at cviverette@wcpss.net before August 28.
